Crawford, Texas (AP) - September 6, 2007

A tragic flood this morning destroyed the personal library of President George W. Bush. The flood began in the presidential bathroom where both of the books were kept. Both of the books have been lost.

A presidential spokesperson said the president was devastated, as he had almost finished coloring the second one.

The White House tried to call FEMA, but there was no answer. :ack

Did they have 2 days warning, and make no effort to evacuate? Were there empty busses in the parking lot, while the books were being ruined?

Reminds me of the small advertisement I saw once in The Times:

'Full set of Encyclopedia Britannica for sale. Recently married. Wife knows everything.'

figures that the guy starting the thread would come from the Republic of Mass...

Not the Republic . . .

figures that the guy starting the thread would come from the Republic of Mass...

The Commonwealth.

Still awaiting official statehood.

Off the mark.

Speaking of presidential libraries, it would be most interesting to compare the number of books read by President George W. Bush during the last year, even with all of his job responsibilities, to the number of books read by Ted Kennedy and John Kerry. President Bush's passion is history and he consistently reads at least one full length volume every five days. In a typical month he will do more reading than Kerry and Kennedy combined do in a year. This of course stands to reason as those who are ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it. In over 2000 years of recorded history the socialism advocated by those two Massachusetts Senators has failed every single time it has been implemented. The socialist road that they, and the entire Democratic Party, is attempting to take United States down today has led to the economic ruin of both Europe and Canada. When I was a young boy and gross national output per citizen in Canada was comparable to that of the United States. Canada chose early on the socialist model of today's Democratic Party. Today, the gross national output per citizen in Canada is about 1/3 that of the GNP per capita in United States. The socialist dominated economies of Europe are rolling train wrecks as well. But it appears, unlike our Massachusetts friends, that Europe is starting to wake up and discard the "Hillary advocated" collectivist socialism that has driven their nations into the dirt. Ireland, with their low taxes and a newly discovered faith in free enterprise and individual initiative is growing economically at triple the rate of the rest of Europe. Even France's hard-core socialist population is, as of late, fed up to the point that they elected a pro-US free-market president. Conservatives do have a genuine beef with President Bush. He is both too liberal and too willing to negotiate with the likes of Ted Kennedy. One cannot compromise with evil without that evil scoring at least a partial victory. The evils of socialism, and the economic destruction and human misery that flows from it, must be confronted and defeated. Both Kennedy and Kerry have college degrees, more than enough education to know that trying to tax and spend one's way to prosperity is as foolish as trying to raise oneself up by standing in a bucket while pulling up on the handle. The failure to read and learn the lessons of history is far less a problem in Crawford, Texas than it is in Massachusetts.

Chip what a write up. Next year I will be turning 50 and I would like to have you mentor me for the second chapter of my life. And oh yes, where do I send in my campaign contribution?

I might be thin skinned, having spent a couple of weeks listening to the radio in the UK and Ireland. I am concerned about the future of our country. Normally, I enjoy a joke as much as the next guy. I find this one in bad taste. Sorry.

Well, I think it's funny.

Especially at the "crazed" reaction by those who cannot take it as it is meant, simple humor. Lighten up for a change. :lolDidn't you have a coloring book and try staying within the lines?

Now this guy, whew!
In over 2000 years of recorded history the socialism advocated by those two Massachusetts Senators has failed every single time it has been implemented.

I love it! 2000 years ago a check in a column was made for each day socialism was tried and failed. How many other categories were there? I mean capitalism has been identified and recorded how long? Speaking historically, and I suggest research be done prior to the challenge: Italian Fascism was, in many respects, an adverse reaction to both the apparent failure of capitalism and a free market society. Is this the path you are recommending for us? I kind of like the way things are compared to many other places.

This of course stands to reason as those who are ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it. Of course we do, I admit to banging my head getting out of my GT more than once. :willy (That's what happened!)
The cliché that people and nations learn from history is not only overused, but also overestimated; often we fail to learn from history, or draw the wrong conclusions. Sadly, historical amnesia is the norm.

What's wrong with repeating history? Give me 50 plus like the last 50 plus and I wouldn't change a thing, overall.

Crazed.

Especially at the "crazed" reaction by those who cannot take it as it is meant, simple humor.

.....Yeah, that's me....crazed.

Now this guy, whew!
In over 2000 years of recorded history the socialism advocated by those two Massachusetts Senators has failed every single time it has been implemented.

.....Correct. Here I have made a statement of fact and have given examples. If you wish to dispute it then please list a society or nation that has become more prosperous as a socialist state than comparable nations have become utilizing less socialism and more free-market policies. You can't do it Pete because it's never happened. Everybody is entitled to their own opinions but nobody's entitled to the wrong facts.

I love it! 2000 years ago a check in a column was made for each day socialism was tried and failed.

.....That socialism is a failure is not open to debate. We do however, have a failure of logic here. One cannot measure an incremental effect "each day". This would be like saying that every day smoking did not have a detrimental effect to my health or did not kill me showed that smoking was successful for me that day. Of the 2000 days that I smoked, it only killed me on one day out of 2000.

Italian Fascism was, in many respects, an adverse reaction to both the apparent failure of capitalism and a free market society. Is this the path you are recommending for us?

.....Say what?? Italian Fascism was an adverse reaction to the failure to confront and defeat evil. Italian Fascism and the misery it inflicted ended when the American capitalist United States Army smashed it like a bug.

The cliché that people and nations learn from history is not only overused, but also overestimated; often we fail to learn from history, or draw the wrong conclusions.

.....Perhaps Bob Uecker and Yogi Berra could understand this last statement, I cannot. Misunderestimated???

Sadly, historical amnesia is the norm.

.....Were on the same page here.

What's wrong with repeating history? Give me 50 plus like the last 50 plus and I wouldn't change a thing, overall.

.....Give the socialists in the Democratic Party a chance to dismantle those freedoms that have made America prosperous for the last 200 years and you'll never see another 50 years of prosperity like the previous half-century.

Sorry to offend you Pete, while you where playing with your coloring book some of us saw combat and have spent time washing out the blood and guts of our comrades from our airships with a garden hose... be happy and grateful that we live in the country we do; that allows freedom of speech and an internet forum such as this one.

As a country we are fighting for our lives, have forgotten aboit 9-11 and disrespectful fooks make jokes about our comander in chief having a library of two coloring books.... Would you tell the same jokes to a group of vets in a V.A. hospital going through rehab?
I am done..

Larry,

So much of what Churchill said in the 1930s is directly applicable to world events today. He was able to see clearly what was out on the horizon and he made his views known when there was still time to avert world war at minimal cost. He of course, was not only ignored, but was ridiculed by his countrymen who were too busy hailing the genius of Chamberlain's negotiated "Peace in our Time" with Hitler. Chamberlain's folly cost millions of men their lives. With Iran nuking up, North Korea thumbing its nose at America and continuing to export weapons technology, and the worldwide cauldron of hate that is radical Islam coming to a boil, the appeasers and apologists of today appear to have learned nothing from Chamberlain's mistakes. From his grave, Winston Churchill's words ring out......"If you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed, if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly, you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all of the odds against you and only a small chance of survival. There may even be a worst-case: you may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.".... Winston Churchill

No offense here, Bony.

Absolutely none, as I say, and you alluded to, some cannot accept another's simple humor. We all have limits on what "crosses the line". A small poke at our current President must do it for some. Like this: President Bush's passion is history and he consistently reads at least one full length volume every five days. Heck, I'd say he gets through at least on full length volume every five days 'cause he only looks at the pictures.

While I was crossing the coloring lines, unless you're about 80, you were not in combat. If we're referring to Vietnam, another vet here. AQ on the Forestall for 3 years, 3 months, ships company. W/C 650, AIMD. That being said, it was by choice. It doesn't make me any different or give me any more or less voice than those that didn't, and by todays standards, don't opt to serve. I don't think they had air ships like that in Korea, so, we must be on the same page within a few years or so.

. . . be happy and grateful that we live in the country we do; that allows freedom of speech and an internet forum such as this one.

That's why I hope for the second half to be as good as the first. As for the freedom of speech thing, well, I am certain if he had his way, thinking a dictatorship would be a great thing if he were the dictator, that would pass too. And I don't make this stuff up. And besides, didn't Al invent the internet? :lol Whoops, he may have, but not this forum. Suppose it goes without saying that I support free speech and enjoy this forum as much, and probably more than most. How else could I have access to tremendous wealth of GT knowledge for service, parts, mods . . . .it just never ends.

But our President is just so Pedestrian, allow the occasional wise crack from time to time. Or spend more time in DC with me, and you'll see what I mean.

Yep, I fear the apple did roll pretty far from that tree.

Nothin' but love for the forum & members.

I'd been led to believe that the European GDP is ahead of the USA GDP according to the IMF and World Bank (Europe being roughly the same population as the USA). The UK is the 6th highest GDP out of 179 countries measured.

Despite having said that, nationalistic pissing competitions are rather unattractive. :wink

Agree wholeheartedly! I have had a few things going on in my mind for the last few weeks. Looking for a purpose past what I do in my life, adding to the capitalist system, trying to be a good father in what limited time I have and generally trying to be forgiven for the stupid things that I have done in my life. I look at service and my mind wanders to of all people JFK. "Ask not what your country can do for you but, what you can do for your country."

That has been ringing loud in my ears for about a year ... but even more so in the last two-three weeks. The one question is .... if you could would you serve now? What would you willingly give up to serve and protect the opportunities that you have been given?

Pete, I love you and thanks for your service to Country. My final question is, would you want the kids that our serving over there to see this thread? Yeah, I am very sensitive...
Have a great day and
GOD BLESS AMERICA,
daniel

Hmmmmmmmmm. I'm 63 and I think I was in combat. I seem to remember firing a 'few rounds' at somebody or another sometime in the late 1960's while wearing some kind of uniform. ('Coarse, come to think of it, that just may NOT count as
"combat" 'cause 'Nam was a "peace action" and not an actual war - as we all know.)

'Just nit pickin' atcha to pull your chain a bit, Pete!:biggrin
