Exhaust upgrade

I had a h pipe on a mustang like x but bridged. I think the h cross needs to be tuned to the system but it sounded sweet

So, if I were to buy the X pipes from Rich and keep the mufflers and bumper I would be good?

Yes. If you want a bumper delete, you have to decide which one you want (really only 2 available). Bumper delete needs shorter exhaust pipes. and while you're doing this, put on a transmission cooler if you don't have one already. The Ford one is unobtanium, look at Kendall's CoolTech option.

The X pipe replaces the muffler. And you choose an X pipe (re tip length, that is) based on whether or not you will keep the bumper or remove it.

So I can update the list above, where does the H pipe fall re loudness? Is it about the same as the X pipe but just a different tone?
My wife and I listened to about 8-10 different options (side by side) at Carlisle Ford Nationals (10 years ago) and selected the H-pipe...I'm guessing its ~modern X-pipe.

FWIW….I have a Hefner x-pipe and back in the day when my hearing was still sharp, the drone was very annoying. Alas, like Chip, my compromised hearing allows me to ignore the drone but at highway speeds, conversation is still challenging.

Is your x pipe from Rich the GT Guy?
After purchasing our GT in 2009, one of the first things I noticed was it didn't have the muscle car sound I appreciated from some of my other cars.
Rather than jumping at the first option I could get, I did what others have mentioned and waited for an opportunity to hear several options in person, including riding in other members cars to see what it sounded like from the inside and at different throttles. (Thanks again Frank & Blake!)
The GTG set up fit what I was looking for and we are still happy with that choice. I found the minimal drone we might experience is at a point that is easily avoidable for the most part.

Jeff

Thanks for all the help. Sounds like the GTG is what I need.
Jeff, I appreciate the information.

Ford Performance/Borla makes a sound that should have been stock.
GTG or Boden for muffler delete.
Muffler delete and cat delete does not seem to be too loud.

I run 3" titanium delete with valves (2.5" bypass pipes & no muffler), on non-merged system. Cruising windows up is quiet. On throttle & windows down is a different story.

Hands down, go with Rich's bumper delete and retro exhaust that puts the pipes where they belong!

And I really don't think I have any distinct drone?

I designed my own X-pipe and as mentioned, there is a drone around 2150 RPM. I am currently designing a quarter wave pipe (Helmholtz Resonator) that should reduce it. More later on this project, JayGTsaver exhaust system 3.jpg

Jay, good to know.

Calling another exhaust system an "upgrade" is a misnomer, unless you consider louder as an upgrade. They sound different, but don't give you more performance. I went to the Borla/Ford Racing muffler, partly because it weighs 20lbs less. It is louder when you accelerate, but at cruise it's pretty close to the OE muff. No drone either.

LOVE the high exit point!!! Looks fantastic.

.

Stock Racing Muffler was just too quiet for me ,i recently removed mine & put it in storage & replaced it with the Boden titanium exhaust & kept my cats ,i love it so far & like the note from the titanium ,i'm guessing all these options sound better than the Oem exhaust .I would agree go to a FGT event so you can hear all the options as they are little different it seems .I have the Ford headers but haven't put them on yet .

I have a buddy here in Indy, Pete W. with a red 2005 GT. His exhaust sounds great, my wife mentioned how much better his sounds than our stock exhaust. He was not sure what was on his car, as it was on when he purchased it. I will try to see what he actually has on his.

Rick, not a lot of wives opine on exhaust notes--I'd say you've got a "keeper" there! ;)
