We put the Kinetic with baffles next to Lamboman's beautiful yellow GT with the Ford Racing Headers and no cats.

Here is the decibel comparison:

Kinetics baffles
IDLE 87
1000 87
2000 92
3000 101
4000 104
5000 106

FORD RACING, NO CATS
IDLE 90
1000 92
2000 97
3000 103
4000 106
5000 111

The Ford Racing headers without cats are really crisp. Maybe Eric or someone else that understands how the decibel range works can explain it to the rest of us.

Unfortunately, we did not measure a stock car (mine, for instance) to get a baseline.

The 5db maximum difference between Don's and A.J.'s car is significant, when you consider that a 3db difference is a doubling in loudness.

I would describe the sound of Don's car (aka, Tungsten) with a Kinetics muffler with Baffles, as mellow and throaty while the sound of A.J.'s car (aka, Lamboman) with FRPP exhaust is raw and viceral.

Don's car sounds like a modern endurance racer from the Rolex series; A.J.'s car sounds like it took a wrong turn off the Mulsanne straight, circa 1968!

According to their respective owners neither car has any drone.

Are you using "A-weighted" (dBA) readings? This is what is used to measure at the track and gives us a better comparison for the human ear. I have seen dBA requirements of 103, 95, 92 and 90 at different tracks. From experience, 103 is as loud as I would ever want. Again, this was measured as a car drives by at 50 or 100 feet, depending on the track.

Any advice on which decibel meter to buy?

THIS IS GOING TO GIVE US ALL SOME GREAT INFORMATION! :biggrin

I used "A" weighting rather than "C" weighting at distance of about 10 feet. "C" weighting is typically used for audio system testing.

Depending on the track and the distance to the track measuring device, both of these pipes should be OK.
