"MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A professional drag racer whose car plowed into a parade crowd, killing six people and injuring 22 others last summer, has been charged with vehicular homicide and assault.

Troy Critchley surrendered to authorities on multiple felony charges, including six counts of vehicular homicide due to recklessness and 22 counts of reckless aggravated assault, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

He was indicted March 4 but the charges remained under seal until Thursday.

A judge set a $35,000 bond for Critchley during a hearing in Selmer and scheduled trial for Nov. 3.

Critchley, a 38-year-old driver from Australia, was performing a "burnout" routine — spinning the tires to send up clouds of smoke — when his car crashed into a crowd at a charity event June 16 in Selmer.

Critchley and his lawyer couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

He has been named in lawsuits filed over the crash.

He was doing what he was suppose to do at that event in the area given to him to DO IT, something broke or whatever, and people were killed. Now he's charged? In part for being "WRECKLESS"? Something just doesn't pass the smell test here. Is NYFONG(sp?) the DA down THERE now, or what? If anyone ought to be charged, it ought to be the people who set up the area Critchley 'performed' in. If I recall the vid of this event correctly, there was NO real protection provided for the surrounding crowd at all.

(All that being said, if I'd been asked to do what Critchley was asked to do, I'd have insisted the crowd - at a minimum - was kept m-u-c-h further back B4 I made that burnout. But then, we all know what a "weenie" I can be.)

They make a point in the "related" section to mention this guy had a prior DUI. Ok. Fine. Did he blow a 1.0 or whatever after this mishap? If not - why even bring that up? It had NOTHING to do with the event.

As an aside; are drivers in road races/rallies in EUROPE charged with recklessness, assault, homicide etc., if THEY hit/kill/injure somebody during wunna THOSE events?

Sad story...

The crowd should have been behind some kinda' fence or barricade at the minimum. The driver should have refused to do the burn out in that situation.

Get some lawyers involved, that'll make it all better.
