A similar thread just recently got locked... a little too political.

Domestic stupidity versus Global warming.

Do we need to get off middle east oil? Well let's hear why global warming won't help.

Ford GT 1625,

We (the United States) don't use a lot of middle east oil. Most of the oil we use that is not produced in the U.S. comes from Canada, Mexico, and Venezuela. Oil is fungible however so the price for a barrel of a barrel of oil produced anywhere is determined by the price of a barrel of oil consumed everywhere. We probably have as much oil in America and off our coasts as is contained in the middle east. The United States has the world's largest coal reserves. Our nation contains massive natural gas reserves. We are the only major oil-producing nation on earth that is not aggressively drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. And just as a man will starve to death in his own home if he is unwilling to eat the food in his own pantry, we are forced to import massive amounts of oil at inflated prices that we ourselves have driven higher by our own unwillingness to produce domestic supplies contained in our own country. Fossil fuels are the equivalent to any developed economy of what oxygen is to any mammal. They are both essential to the functioning of those organisms. If we don't get them here we must get them there, or we will wither and die. Our national leaders tell us that nuclear energy is unacceptable, power generation using coal is unacceptable, drilling for natural gas is unacceptable, drilling offshore for oil is unacceptable, and drilling anywhere onshore in the United States, including in the wasteland tundra of northern Alaska that is almost never visited by man and seldom even by beasts, is unacceptable. And in their next breath they bitch about our dependence upon foreign oil. Our domestic stupidity is a bigger source of our energy problems than global warming. And yeah, this subject inevitably leads into a political discussion, so this thread is history as well.
