The one thing you don't want to fail are your breaks, but somehow all the fit-n-finish awards, magazine hooplas, blah blah blah overlooked the No. 1 safety issue. No car is immune and BMW is no quality standard. I'm just sayin......

"Other luxury carmakers have also had to issue recalls in recent months, with General Motors putting out a notice in late September for 20,000 Cadillac CTS models to fix their glove compartments." Let me see here, Brakes or Glove Compartments? Hummmmm.

It seems that BMW has a serious issue with Braking....

http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5iKcZnMJWemUOv9gPNVroZFBtx3sw

"Over time, it emerged that even corrected braking systems did not resolve the problem 100 percent".

It’s a voluntary recall. I'd still rather have a BMW over almost anything out there. I've had an X5, 545, 745i and a 745Li in the past...all fantastic cars:tongue

From the article:

"The potential fault is a small leak that could develop in the power-assisted braking system ... if there is a leak the car would lose some breaking power but should still be able to stop,"

"Not all the vehicles are necessarily affected by the problem" but owners should nonetheless bring them in for checks, the German spokesman said.

No accidents have been reported and a simple parts replacement would clear up the problem, he added.

Thanks Sam for the update, I have one of the cars on the list. I guess my resale value took another hit :(

Remember its Voluntary!

Whoa! A leak in a vacuum line! It's the end of the world!
All those happy BMW customers will stop buying BMW'S!

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – September 30, 2010... BMW of North America is submitting a letter to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) this week announcing a voluntary recall of approximately 198,000 V8 and V12-powered BMW 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars models produced between the 2002 and 2010 model years. In the affected vehicles, a leak may develop in the power braking system, potentially causing a vacuum loss and consequent reduction of power braking assistance. Mechanical braking is still available to slow and stop the vehicle. There has been no report of accidents or injuries.

BMW has prepared an inspection and repair procedure and will distribute replacement parts throughout the North American dealer network. Letters will be sent by First Class mail to owners of affected vehicles in the coming weeks, requesting the scheduling of a service appointment with an Authorized BMW Center to check their vehicle.

Drivers who experience reduced power braking assistance should immediately schedule a service appointment with an Authorized BMW Center. Customers with further questions should contact BMW Customer Relations at 1-800-525-7417 or email [email protected].

Affected BMW models include:
• 2002-08 BMW 745i/Li, 750i/Li, and 760i/Li
• 2007-08 BMW Alpina B7
• 2004-10 BMW 645i and 650i
• 2004-10 BMW 545i and 550i

BMW are about packaging & artifice...you get sporting flair, mass market engineering, and some fun

Anyone thats owned one past the warranty will attest to its ability to systematically need replacement subsystem by subsystem

Having had one for 13 yrs...i felt eveything from its leather seats, to brake system (replaced Master twice, ABS died), to electronics were on the edge of quality coupled with flimsiness. They often could have gone another 10% and made a part better, but dont. Todays Staples office chair quality leather in the 3 series v. the Hyundai Genesis coupes leather is one glaring example.

Everyone should own one; but its not one to outlast the ages, or retain any value.

My 40 yo Mercedes has quality, with a dual line brake system.

The issue is not that BMW is any different from any other Automobile manufacturer, they are not any better in my opinion and are not recall immuned. People by BMWs for many reasons but here in my neighborhood, they are as common as Donkeys in Mexico and Camels in the Sahara Desert. The main reason they own BMWs is because of a perception that they have - they are for the elite, give me a fricking break. Others tout their Fit-n-Finish which in my humble opinion is no better or worse than a Ford Taurus. Teenagers especially, think they are really cool, but hey its a personal choice. In any event to have your brakes go out is inexcusable.

My brother owns 2 BMWs and have sunk more money into his 120,000 mile BMW than I have bad mouthed the iPhone - but to each his own!!!

Could not agree with you more. My 230SL was an unbelievable car and I truly regret selling it.

Do you let him park in your driveway when he visits, or do you make him park around the corner?

I have a special pan for his leaky fluids and he's even a Liberal, but he's my family so I tolerate it all.

I just sold my JCW Mini Cooper (BMW product). The car was really fun to drive and I enjoyed it. However, I was shocked at how flimsy and fragile it was, given it was a BMW product. The interior parts were particularly troublesome and would randomly fall off or break. It had more rattles than any Ford I have EVER owned. The week before I sold it the fuel pump (at 17k miles) failed. I had it replaced under warranty. My buyer informed me it failed again right after he took delivery of the car. I'm not suggesting other cars are superior to BMW products but I would say BMW products are very overrated. I was afraid to own the car past the warranty period. At least the sale of the Mini has made room for a 1970 Boss 302 I have my I eye on. By God, if I am going to own a car that has rattles and a cheap interior, it's going to be a 1970 Boss 302.

That sure wasn't the case with wifey! She had turned down a Bentley Cont GT Coupe before she decided on her BMW. 'Statoose'...real, imagined, or otherwise...doesn't sway her one way or the other. She simply likes what she likes. And she really LIKED the looks of her car ('all of its safety features, too).

(Side note: I had a 'conversation' with Neil some time later regarding the Bentley GT...during which we discussed its DEPRECIATION, etc. :ack:willy I came away DARN GLAD she'd turned that car down! :willy:willy:willy)

Teenagers especially, think they are really cool...

Some 10 year-olds, too, evidently. A kid about that age went nuts over wifey's coupe in a store parking lot this past Wednesday.
(SHUDDUP, Sam...don't say it...)

BTW - how was lunch?

'Sounds just like wifey's old Eldo...only IT was far worse.

That's THEE $$$ reason wifey is replacing hers. But, the primary reason is the lack of room from the rear seats to the backrests of the front seats. 'Not enough space to have both the grandkids' car seats mounted back there AND occupy both front seats at the same time. :willy

Yeah, I thought this was a politics free forum.

Next thing you know, we'll see BMW SUCKS SPONSOR BANNERS.

Heheh.

My wife's 3 year lease is up on her X5 4.8i. So, I'm taking Sam's advice again, and getting another X5 for her. This time with the 6 cylinder turbo.

:)

It's been a perfect vehicle for her. And built at the Spartanburg plant, nonetheless. I was a little concerned about build quality, but it's been fine.

We have a Cooper S and I concur with your findings. She likes it enough not to get rid of it... yet. Resale is very good fortunately.

Did you see the latest Motor Trend comparing the $40K Mustang GT to the $67K M3? The Mustang bested the M3 in nearly every performance category (solid axle and all) and with a professional driver, was only .09 seconds behind lapping Willow Springs. With better shocks, The Mustang would have probably bested the M3 there too.

:usa

You can count on Sam for bringing us the latest bad news for BMW or Apple!

I hear there are a few Rolls also being asked to glide back to the factory.... I must inform my butler.
