Boy - does that bring back memories! After Jim Jeffords had his career with Nickey Chevrolet, he went on to pilot some Group 7 machinery, notably Scarabs for Meister Brauser (Augie Pabst's Team), Camoradi (USRRC Championship) & J. Frank Harrison (USAC Championship) in late 1959 & 1960.
That's when I met him, at Riverside International Raceway in 1960, when he drove the long-tail Le Mans Birdcage Maserati for J. Frank Harrison of the Chattanooga Glass Company (they made the bottles for Coca-Cola), while Carroll Shelby drove the brand new short tail Birdcage. Here's a picture from the cover of Road & Track (02/'61) as they came through turn 7 at Riverside (Jefford's leading, Pabst in the Scarab, & Shelby in the "98" Birdcage) -

It was my 1st pit crew job, and wow - to be with 2 of the more famous drivers of the time, was a very special moment, and they asked me to stay on with them through the end of the season at Laguna Seca! We finished 4th (Jeffords) & 5th (Shelby), then went on to have Shelby finish 2nd overall at Laguna Seca to win the USAC Sports Car Championship, after which he retired from racing!
Mercedes of Monterey gave us their garage for the weekend in Monterey, and here are a couple of pictures (from the archives) of me working on the long-tail 'cage (don't know why I wore a white shirt to work on cars!)

Our Paddock & transporter in 1960 - I look a bit tired, leaning on that GMC or Chevy truck....

I caught up with Jim again at the "Legends of Riverside" in March, 2010, along with my cohort Eddie Matsuishi, and we reminisced about the old days together. Sadly, Jim passed away last year (2014), but I'll always remember his friendly face and happy smile.
