Happy news for me and other folks who ordered the Launch Edition Viper (all $140K of it) . In the anxiously awaited Motor Trend tests it was badly beaten by a ZR1. SRT is tweeting surprise, disappiontment--i 'll bet particularly when you had 2 years to get this right.

I don't often put much stock in mag tests, but this one looked pretty legit and to get beaten that badly, something ain't right with this car.

I should have known something was up when all they seemed to talk about is how pretty the interior is. I have plenty of pretty interiors , thank you. To pay $40K more than any Viper I have ever owned this car should have coming roaring out of the gates.

That was very unexpected! Thought the new one would be more like ACR-X with new look and street legal.
But be happy, you still have a GT don't you??? ;)

I'm surprised by that result, but will definitely need to see repeat performances that back it up. I just find it hard to believe that with the hiatus between model years and the benchmarks they had to have that it would be slower, let alone a lot slower. This has to be making Gilles insane. I didn't get a chance to read it, was the ZR1 on Cup tires or something?

I'm not buying that.

Here's a link to the article.

Have to say I share GTDrummer's disappointment. Will wait for more numbers to come out, but giving serious thought to backing out of my Launch Edition for Anchorage. If they couldn't get the performance "right" with 2 years to work on it, what else is lurking...

Enzo is getting even

The mag shocks on the ZR1 are tough to beat. Given how close the stats are for both cars, the lap times really illustrate the value of a well sorted suspension. I am sure Fiat had better suspension choices for the Viper in its inventory.

Yes.

Until Gilles mentioned it, I didn't know Probst was a candy-a**. :lol

Just read the article.....WOW, fail is just dripping off the Viper.

I'll admit, I didn't like the Viper previously (other than exterior look and rarity). It drove horribly (the only time I drove one...went over an expansion joint on a Houston freeway....ended up in the next lane, thank God no one was beside me) and rode worse with stupid ergonomics.

But I thought Fiat would do great things with this one.....looks like corporate "slotting" will hold it in place, well behind Ferrari.....but also behind the top Corvette offerings.

I will say as boring and run-of-the-mill as modern Corvettes are, they have the ZR-1 correct under the bonnet at least.

No kidding.

"In this case, the driver was Randy Pobst, a.k.a. the guy who won the SCCA World Challenge GT Championship three different times and has two class wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona. Not slow."

I seriously doubt he was even the slightest bit "timorous".

Well, the Viper gets better gas mileage....

From the article:
"The ZR1’s R-compound Michelins are rated at 80 treadwear. The Viper’s Pirelli P Zero Corsas are an equally yet somehow even more ludicrous 60 treadwear."

GTDRUMMER, you should now have a little sympathy for the ZL1 owners. :lol
Seriously, I would not put too much emphasis on one test. I mean who the heck is that Probst hack anyway?

I have a set of Cup Tires and wheels for my ZR1,,, all I can say is "oh my god" are they sticky.... unbelievable traction... the problem they leave rubber all over your car and the track.

DBK---for any number of reasons, I personally am not a big Gilles fan. I know that cuts against the grain.

He went from Prez of Dodge to SRT--not, in my eyes, a lateral move. I think he is way overblown and is one of the reasons Viper began going downhill from Gen 3 on (this coming from somone who has had 3 Gen 3s and 3 gen 4s)

Ralph was under considerble pressure to get the product out - a hurried effort in my opinion ....it was a deal breaker for me when they only came out with 640HP; a dated attempt at the competition level. Had two Vipers previously but not inspired to pick-up another one.

It was definitely not a promotion, that's for sure. Drives his ACR alot around town. Went to a party at his house and he seems to genuinely be a huge car guy. Very nice person in person. It was a surreal event, as the house was filled with Chrysler execs just as the auto bailout reached fever pitch. Funerals are a less depressing scene than the looks those guys were wearing.

the considerably longer wheelbase that the ZR1 has is a BIG advantage....

I'm not that surprised, given that the ZR1 is way faster off the line than any previous generation Viper...and that the ZR1 puts down all that torque starting at just above idle, whereas the Viper really has nothing at the wheels much under 3k RPM.

So now, SRT puts a (long awaited and sorely needed) 355 rear end on the new snake, but doesn't dramatically change the power curve on on that antiquated seriously bloated and "grossly-underpowered-for-its-size" engine...so the ZR1 should still smoke the Viper in a straight line.

Unless you're a pro (or way above the norm amateur) driver with a lot of seat time in a Viper, even a Z06 will take it in a roll, leave alone a ZR1. I know there are those (very) few Viper owners who can ZR1's and Z06's, but the Viper is almost impossible to launch and get great times with on a drag strip. Bone stock, there is the odd (very rare) driver who can beat a Z06, but never a ZR1. Unless I've seen proof with my own eyes, I will say ZR1's are always faster than Vipers, given the same driver in each car. (Drag strip) I've yet to see proof to the contrary.

True that the Viper is a beast on the track...and should easily out handle almost anything in it's class, but the ZR1 still has better power delivery and can handle almost (if not) as well as the Viper.

For a few thousand dollars, you can take a 638 HP ZR1 and add another 100-150 HP...and make it go even faster without even coming close to stretching limits...sounds like our GT's! Yes, I know you can add a gazillion HP to a Viper and still have a very solid and reliable engine, (for a huge cost)...but, that ZR1 will still sail right by it...(even though the Viper owner will say he beat the ZR1). :)

So besides a lot of mandated traction controls and a new interior that can accommodate taller drivers in more comfort, what we really know about the all new Viper?

1) It's uglier than previous generations of Vipers.
2) It has bizarre looking LED headlights that totally strip it of its character...now it looks like a pussy car that lost its identity!
3) It has a really nice looking ass!
4) Its maker is now owned by Fiat.
5) It has fatter tires.
6) Probably has a TPMS that actually tells you which tire is low, as opposed to the stupid idiot light on the Gen IV.
7) Costs quite a bit more than a ZR1 and any previous generation Viper
8) Still has the same fanboy crowd blabbing about it being the greatest / best and only sports car ever built. (some exceptions apply, like me and GT drummer - LOL)
9) Comes in a plethora of unattractive new colors
10) Will command a few who will pay over MSRP to own a 2013 All New Viper.
11) It's (apparently) slower than a 4 year old ZR1 on the track
12) They'll probably still only sell hundreds rather than thousands per year...Hmmmmm...(they couldn't even sell out the 500 2010's they built)

I read the article. I know it says that the Viper is as fast and feels faster in a straight line. I have my doubts. Jamie Furman ran well under 10 seconds in the 1/4 mile on a stock ZR1, as opposed to the test data that claims the two are dead even. He also ran a 10.92 in my Viper a few years back when it was new. But can the new Viper run a 10.75 like he did in the ZR1? I doubt it.

Well, the Viper gets better gas mileage....
You read the columns backwards...LOL. Viper's will NEVER get better gas mileage than Vettes. Vettes don't carry a gaz guzzler tax - whereas Vipers do.
