I used black beauty blasting sand. Not because it has some technical merit but because the fab yards i do business with buy it by the ton and don't mind if I recycle a 5 gal bucket once a year or so. But I had no issue getting the factory clear coat off. I did not blast the bottom.

Thanks for posting the pic. Yes, that is how those were done. The top surface is a brushed finish, not polished although that might look good too depending on the porosity of your covers. Mine would not polish well.

Those were manufactured by MGW Ltd for Ford Racing. They still sell similar though not exact caps today. They may have some of those older ones if you call them. Also they are chrome plated aluminum, not stainless steel.

The dealers will not disassemble the air bag device itself. The propellant canister is inside. They MAY remove the and have Takata replace the canister on an exchange basis but the dealers will not do this. For them, its R&R the air bag assembly. Send the faulty one where you will.
