Clamshell not unlatching on driver's side

Just a small 1/8th inch zip tie. Can barely tell it’s there

Dan, I can't tell - Is that zip tied around the just cable? Or does it also go around something above the cable?

Just the cable just taking up the slack of the rubber that’s missing

I believe I found a suitable fix, beside tiewraps, and completed it today. I found some grommets on Amazon, almost identical to the plastic piece to the one that failed. I removed the plastic switch part of the clamshell latch to make it easier to work with. The grommets are made of silicone rubber and with a little spit, are flexible enough to stretch and slide over the cable ball and cable, then fit snuggly into the release arm clip as the original cable grommet did. Pictures of the grommet and how i fixed it are below. Please let me know if you have any questions. Let's see if it stands the test of time!

Did you have to cut the slit to slide the cable in or do they come already prepped. Edit: I see you slid it in.

No I didn't have to slit the grommet. Like I mentioned, add a little spit (saliva) and you can slide the ball through the grommet hole. No slit, so no worry that it comes off.

Awesome! (y) 🍻 Here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/PATIKIL-Grommets-Automotive-Firewall-Protection/dp/B0DKTBN53V

Dam......this is a great forum. The perfect fix that I just ordered. Thanks all for the find and the link.

MUCH more elegant than my band-aid. NICE!

I just installed one side of the recommended grommet by TORQJNKY into the cable. I didn’t use spit lol,but armor all and everything connected nicely. Do recommend if you are removing the latch to use painters tape. The close sensor switch needs to come off at the bottom. Two tabs (as depicted on the attached pic) need to be pushed in for it to release. In case you break the tabs on the switch attached is the part number.

Thanks for the photos! If one removes the latch from the bracket as you did, are there any realignment problems?

I lightly marked the top surround with a marker. I believe you can see the black marks. Therefore the original alignment was maintained.

Thanks to TORQJNKY! I did add a small safety wire as a backup. While I was disassembling the latches to work on them, crusty pieces of the old grommets fell out. Good to go now.

Isn’t the safety wire cutting into the grommet? Maybe just the way the photo was taken.

Yes, I think he nicked the bladder (an old doctor's joke).

It’s barely touching. Gonna monitor how this goes. I’ve got a whole bag of grommets!

Reminds me of an OB-Gyn joke…. Gyn docs know four operations…take out the uterus from above, take out the uterus from below, cut the left ureter, cut the right ureter…

Well this thread took an unexpected turn!
