Hi CRB,
Take a look at the thread. I posted a little info about my tickets. I defended myself in those cases, and still kept them off my record.
It cost a little & had to do the driving school thing, but worth it to keep the record clean.
You can do it yourself, you don't really need a lawyer.
Check out what Nardo said in his post as well, it's worth talking to the judge or his clerk prior to your court date so as to understand the process.
