I noticed a fair amount of road tar behind my front wheels on my lower body panels. I noticed there is a clear protective tape as well. I never installed any; is this standard?
Anyobe use road tar remover or some mild cleaner they can recommend?
A Clay Bar works wonders on tar, among other things as well.
Go to your local auto parts store and look for Clay Magic (Or order online) and follow the directions on the back of the box. It is very easy to use, just spray the clay lube on the contaminated area (after washing of course) and gently glide the clay bar over the surface.
There are other solutions available such as a Bug & Tar Remover that can work well, but my only problem with them is you are taking a rather aggressive approach to removing it when it is not required. If you spray the bug and tar remover and use one of those weaved sponges, there is not any "lubricant" between the sponge and the clear coat like the clay bar and you are more likely to scratch.
With the clay bar you are using a thin lubricant consisting of soap and water that will glide the clay bar across, rather than require aggressive scrubbing from a sponge or spray on remover. Also with the clay, any grit that may be on the surface is more likely to get embedded into the clay bar itself rather than being dragged across the surface until your tar is gone.
If the clay bar does not take care of it, your local auto parts store should have a product called Stoner Tarminator in a tall can with a yellow cap. Spray it on the tar and let it sit for a few minutes, re-lube the surface with the clay lube, and then try the clay bar again. That will remove even the most stubborn road tar without harming your clear coat.
Just my experience. I'm sure others will chime in with good ideas too.
