I was wandering the Petersen Museum yesterday and noticed they have an original GT40 MARK III and a 2006 GT (tungsten no stripe car) sitting side by side for comparison. The Petersen Museum is on Wilshire Blvd near downtown Los Angeles. They also have a Ferrari collection and they are featuring the cars and FINKs of Ed Roth.

By the way the GT 40 was one of seven cars made and one of 4 made with left hand drive.

Hey, Ed, I thought the origional GT40 had a single, side to side radiator vent as opposed to the FGT style "twin vents"... or was that ONLY for the "track cars" back then? :shrug

The pic seems to show "twins" on the street '40.

That original GT40 came up for auction a few years back (I think as part of the Monterey Weekend) and when I saw it in the catalog I was quite depressed because I knew there was no way for me to swing it financially.

However, when I followed up on the sale and learned that Robert Petersen got it I knew it would at least end up in a place where many can appreciate it. Glad to see it on display!

BTW, the final selling price was $320,000. While not cheap, I remember thinking it was a BARGAIN! The new GT hadn't hit showrooms yet, and I knew when it did there would be a resurgence in knowledge and appreciation for the original cars.

Wonder what its value is today? I know I'd happily pay $320,000 for it if I could...

Hi Larry, the street cars have several features you won't find on the track cars. The trunk lid up front is one, the engine cover has been extended several inches for luggage and the windows swing out for ventilation. This car sold new for $20K.

I was wondering where that Mark III wound up...

:ack :ack :ack

But then again, a new 427 'Vette back then stickered @ $6,000 - $6,300. Three times $6,300 is $18,900. A new 'Vette vs. a FGT today 'figgers' out at about the same multiple!!!!!:lol
(A Shelby Cobra 427 side oiler car stickered for about $12,500 in those days if I remember right.)

"The more things change..."

Bump.....I was at the Peterson on May 17 and couldn't help but notice that the FGT's are still there - two years since my last visit! Maybe they are on permant display!

Two vent hoods.

Larry,

All GT40s sold as street cars had twin vent hoods. Most race cars did as well. The single large vent hood was developed after production to improve cooling.

By the way there are more pictures of the MKIII in the photo gallery.
