Twin Turbos in California - Please come in...

I was talking to friend today who asked me a simple question;

How do the TT GTs in California plan on getting their cars smoged? And, are any of the Twin Turbo setups CARB approved?

I seriously contemplated the TT setup instead of the Whipple but after my discussion with him I started thinking about all the TT threads on the forum and I can not recall any in at least SoCal. Are his questions appropriate?

I know a lot of cali cars people *tip* the person who inspects it. Please don't see this post as suggesting it, but rather informing that it happens :)
 
If the car will pass emissions and the tech does not know the visual difference between a blower and a turbo, the car will go through.

The vin is scanned into the system these days. Pretty hard to get around out here.
 
The car has to pass the snifter test,... can't do it without cats.
The tech cheats he goes to jail.
Anymore questions? This is why I run a CARB approved WHIPPLE.
Wish I could run a TT, can't do it with CALIFORNIA plates on the FGT.
 
I believe that on new cars, they don't have to be smogged for first 7 years.

TT can be done with cats. The mid pipe that connect the turbos to the exhaust manifold needs to curl up around and over the top of the turbos. This allows enough length after the axle to run cats.
 
from our perspective there is not enough potential business in CA for the GT TT to justify getting a CARB EO number. if the whipple has the EO number then it is the best choice to go with and remain smog legal for CA.
 
Thanks John... That is the conclusion that I have come to.

Besides the smog checks we have random roadside checks. It is not worth it to get on the wrong side of the DMV
 
Glad I made the right choice for the CA car. Now the MN car TT?:biggrin
 
I was at a Chevy dealership yesterday dropping off one of their customers cars when all of a sudden a yellow turbo vette went screaming down the street behind me. I don't know if it was twin turbo or what it was but I definitely could tell that it had a turbo kit on it. I looked at one of my co-workers and immediately asked "If you were a cop and you heard that, wouldn't you question what was making all that noise?" I don't know if there are any CARB legal kits for the Vette's but it definitely made us question it.

For those old enough to remember: do you recall the kool "whistle" a 'Vette's Rochester F.I. made when the air cleaner was removed?:thumbsup (This is back in '57 - '65 or so for the edification of youz "younger" types...)

'Buddy of mine got a NOISE tkt for that - if you can imagine. How LAME a ticket is THAT? 'Pretty chicken livered on the part of the man in blue if you ask me...(and I know you didn't.)
 
Got me thinking.

I have two whipple cars,and a new motor and transaxle just in case.I want to try a TT so before a get a#3.I know in cal a new car wont be smoged
for a few years.But in Mass we get that every year sometimes they skip a year.By the sounds of it a TT will not pass,I do run cats will that make a difference?

Hey Larry, I heard you got a ticket once for Public Flatulation that put out higher decibel than that Rochester Whistle?:willy:willy:willy

Better give the standards that Mass checks for to Torrie and Jason and ask them if you can meet those numbers.

We have a customer in Cal. and he's not had any problems with tag renewal or road side checks. But, he said if he ever does he register it at his other house or a out of state relatives' house.
 
Each to his own, I am not willing to do that.
 
As mentioned in previous posts, if when originally purchasing a GT and registering it in Oregon rather than the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia, around 10k would have been saved.
 
If you live in California you should pay our taxes. It is interesting to note most folks move here and not away.

The penalty for running Oregon plates and living in California is not worth it. Check the 'drop the dime' notices on both the DMV and CHP web sites.

I'm not happy about my taxes, but pay them on time and in full.
