Ashamed to ask this

My oil level is low. Where is the oil cap located to add more oil? I can't find this in the threads as I'm sure everyone but me knows the answer. Is the oil added with the engine is warm or cold? Thanks.

Right hand side of engine bay - it's the large black canister with a top on it. Caution, the smaller can is power steering. Add oil at any temp - but you check it warm and within 1 min after shutdown.

Pauls, the better question might be, how do you know your oil level is low? Serious question.

Really, if you know the oil level is low, then you already found where the oil is added. Repeating what wWabbit said, check the oil level within 1 minute of shutting the engine off. If you wait longer, it may read low when it is not in fact low.

And, do you know what oil to use? Do you know when the oil was last changed?

I can see where you might be embarrassed to ask but believe me there are crazier questions.... like: "what happens if I put a MoTeC and 40lbs of boost on it?"

If you are basing low oil level on an oil pressure light, you might be better served testing the pressure sensor.

Another question about oil level.

I was out driving my car and checked the oil level after I shut it down. Burned the crap out of my hand because of my very cool Project 321 dip stick handle. The oil level on the dip stick was about an inch higher than the full level line. I checked the oil level after car was cool and it was right at the oil level line.

Is this normal?

Since it is a dry sump, you are only checking the oil level in the reservoir - if it's not spilling out a breather or a seal, it really can't be too full.

Thank you Ralphie

Thanks for asking. There is a dip stick on the right side of the engine close to the fire wall that I assume is the engine oil dip stick. Correct?

No I don't have a record on the last oil change. I just bought the car and the records are very thorough except for this. I know the right thing to do is to change the oil. But until I do I'll feel comfortable adding oil. Now I'm interested to know if I am looking at the right dip stick. I also checked the oil with the engine cold. I'll check the engine as wWabbit said and check it 1 minute after shut down.

If you check the engine oil 1 minute after shut down why doesn't it matter if you add oil with a warm or cold engine?

I was going to use the oil that the factory recommends. I have the 2006 dealer work shop manual. I can't recall off hand what Ford recommends. Do you have other recommendations for oil?

I appreciate everyone's comments.

Thanks for the ego boost! I don't know the location of the pressure sensor or what it does. 1971 was the newest car I have worked on. Then most cars were 50's and 60's cars. This is why I am mentally and challenged with the GT.

Accurate level check within 1 min. Add oil any time.

Don't mix different oil types. The Motorcraft oil is fine. Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 is fine. If you don't know when the oil was last changed, and it isn't down more than a quart, then why not just let it be until you get the oil changed?

The workshop manual and your owner's manual both answer the dipstick question.

There are long threads here about which oils may work vs the Ford products. You should search. There are also threads about picking up oil filters cheap since they are a Mann product and used in BMW's as well.

paul- don't ever be ashamed or embarrased about asking any questions about these cars. if you've never owned a Ford DOHC engine, they can be overwhelming the first time you look at them. a lot of us have been around these since 1993 (the basic Ford DOHC architecture) and don't think twice about them. It would be no different if I owned Ferrari V12, I wouldn't know where to begin. this is why the forum exists is to share knowledge about these great cars!

I appreciate all your help.
