Changing out the center speaker

Has anyone taken out the optional center (in the upgraded audiophile) speaker and seen what is underneath? Can it be cleanly replaced with the small "glovebox / gloveholder" that comes in the car with a standard radio?

This has been discussed, do a search, the replacement piece that Ford offers for the cars with standard radio package is over $1k.

Thanks. I did the search, and see that members discussed the speaker and the cars with out the large sub.

I am like some of the others. I think it is a little overkill. In fact, even though I love a good sound system in a car, I typically do not even have the radio on in the GT because I'd rather listen to the car.

Has anyone actually taken the speaker out. Did a "crossover" wiring into the other speakers work? Can anyone give specifics on how to do that.

I have the same issue. Not on;y is that sub woofer butt ugly, but it frees up some spase in the interior...can't you just remove it, unplug it and still play the radio thru the other speakers?

I did remove it!

AZGT,

I already did this and here is what I have done so far (it's far from complete). Also, look at some of my latest postings, as I have studied the disassembly of the center console.

Hi Analogdesigner

Thanks for your reply.

I saw your posts with the clear cover. Looks good. What did you do once you took the speaker out? Do you put others under the seats or just elinimate it? If you eliminated, how does the system sound. Did you need to do anything with the wiring?

Just as a vote, I would do the trim color to match the armrest - it would be a natural tie in.

$1800 for that panel???!

Tell me it's made from exotic leather prepared by blind Austrian nuns?

.....and I thought Aston Martin spares were expensive!

PS if the sub woofer terminals are correctly blanked off (simply ensuring that the + and - wires don't touch by masking them with electrical tape) then there's nothing else you need to do. It will not effect the performance, or damage, the head unit or amplification. If there's room to put a subwoofer under the seats, try it. Near subsonic bass is not directional, nor is it stereo, so you can afford to experiment or just abandon.

Had the woofer swapped out today for the original panel. I only ordered it on Tuesday evening - I'm really enjoying this level of service with Ford - a new experience for me.

The result: It looks much much better, I've gained a storage pocket, it feels like there is a lot more room and I get a really nice view of the supercharger spinning to boot!

There is a bit of a problem though... The woofer has the amp mounted beneath it (inside the enclosure) and with the new panel there isn't room inside it to mount the amp. To compound matters the stereo will not work sans amp. And it's not a trivial job to replace the stereo because the wiring loom is running from the head to the amp/speaker location and then back to the speakers in the doors.

So I currently have a $4,000 clock (when I can work out how to enable the time feature).

Anybody on the board successfully swapped out the stereo?

Any suggestions?

Have been asked in a pm for this so I thought I'd dump it here...

I have them in high res if anyone wants one.

Wow, what a bummer. I thought the amp below the speaker was just the subwoofer amp.

I don't suppose there is room to mount the amp on the floor behind the seat on the passenger side is there? Might have to take out the child seat bracket.

I'd like to do this mod, but only if I can keep the radio functional and be able to return everything to original in the future.

Please keep us posted.

The part number (from my receipt) is listed as :

5G7Z*6340374*BAA cover - JA2022.541805.84

Price $1,805.84 - Ouch!

regarding placement of the amp

There isn't room behind the seat to mount the amp above the child seat bracket and have the seat all the way back - I don't have the correct tool to remove the bracket. It looks like it would be pretty damn tight anyway.

The amp will not fit under the seat either - it might if the sound proofing material in the pan were to be removed - I'm not going to try that.

So.... the next thing is to take the car in to a specialist and take some advice. I'm hoping that the wiring loom can be used with a different head and some nifty jumpering - It's a bit of a stretch...

Could you measure the amp? Love to know the dimensions.

I wonder, if the car doesn't have the Mac, do they not use a amp for the other speakers?

Kenwood USA is one of my clients. I have use many of there products and the built in power amps are getting better and better. I'm thinking it wouldn't take much to fill that little space with sound.

Damn, that center really does look better without the speaker/amp combo and the added space is a BIG +.

I have always been shocked at the quality of the $4,500 Mcintosh radio option. It looks like something sold at the local discount store for $29.95. In a car where there is not enough room for a reasonable trunk, who was the knucklehead who decided to stuff the the cab of the vehicle with a subwoofer the size of one of Pam Anderson's boob?
