What do you think about the .338 Lapua?

You know as a long range shooter its a platform that I should love. But I don't. Let me say this I have shot less than a 1000 rounds of .338 Lapua out of a Accuracy International rifle. The round seemed to float around a bit more than it should and the drop was .... well ok but not anything spectacular. This is kind of like debating a TT GT versus a whippled GT. It comes down to personal preference and what you want to do. For me rifles and cars hold a very dear place in my heart and if I could I would have a locker that would make the local SWAT teams a bit nervous but I resolved myself to buy "only the best for the task, not pretty or trendy just 100% quality". So when I start applying those very subjective factors I have to look at the numbers also.

Round Bullet weight (gr) Muzzle velocity (ft/s - m/s) Muzzle energy.

.50 bmg 700gr 2978 (907.7) 13971(18942.1)
.416 Bar 400 gr 3250 (990.6) 9380(12717.5)
.338 Lap 300 gr 2717 (828.1) 4919(6669.2)
.338 lap 250 gr 2970 (905.2) 4893(6634.0)
6.5mm Gr 108 gr 2700 (820)

I added the 6.5mm for reference there since the shape of the grendel and the .416 are very similar what is truly remarkable is that the Grendel is still supersonic at 1000 yards while the .338 Lap is dropping speed rapidly and goes subsonic sharply at about 1200 yards. Unfortunately I don't have muzzle energy numbers for the 6.5mm. However when you look at how they hit at 1000 plus yards the ballistic efficency of the .416 is superior. The selling point of the .338 is that it is still able of punching through soft body armor at 1000 yards which the Grendel will do just by the speed it is traveling.

At these ranges it comes down to shooter skill and to be honest I can register a head shot with a stock M-16 at 500 meters using Iron sights. Would I place my life on it ... yes and I have .... but would it be the tool I picked for the job. Absolutely not! When looking at this class of rifle it comes down to opening ground and still making that tight shot at those distances. Then it comes down to personal choice. Mine is obvious through the last post and I respect anyone elses choice if they placed thier life on it ... its their right.

Oh and for the record ... modern military snipers don't shoot at the head like in the movies. Its a too low a probability shot and their business is making the area safe for our guys on the ground. So really any rifle that can do a sub one minute shot at 100 yards repeatedly is a "good" sniper rifle. But just to be honest and reconfirm we are only debating differences in "super" rifles and in that area I really don't have an opinion on the .338 Lapua other than its just not my cup of tea ... baby! :lol

For me a measly .308 does the job. Not many ranges around me that have anything over 300 yards and I figure its good to 500 to 800 yards for paper or soft targets.

Have you tried a .408 Chevy Tac?

Agreed for most the trusty .308 does the job and with a skilled shooter is good way past the ranges you shoot. As I said earlier this is a simple debate between "super" rifles. Kind of like debating who's the best Playboy bunny.... they'd all do and then some! :lol

I have tried the .408 ... shot about 100 or so rounds. Great platform but like the Barrett better. It might be familiarity since I have WAY over 10,000 rounds out of Barretts (actually probably closer to 40,000 .. but lost the log books (long story buy me a Makers someday and I'll bend your ear on it)) So I might be biased towards the platform ... I don't think I am but maybe. But back to the .408, if your plugging at 300 yard targets all these rifles are WAY overkill and simply shooting for the joy of making big holes in paper and sensory feel of it all. And its more than a good platform for that but for UBER long shots on paper, soft, or hard targets ... I'm bringing my .416 to the fight. The real gem here on this platform is the computer/scope system and in the world of one shot on target demanded its hard beat that aid.

As far as making big noise and punching paper you guys might want to look at Alexander Arms Beowulf .50. Bill Alexander is one of the nicest, most honorable and straight shooting (no pun there) guys I have ever had the honor to meet, makes only top quality goods and will back anything he makes to the end of times. The rifle is really cool for what it is and is WAY TOO much fun to shoot! :biggrin

For long range precision, I prefer bolt actions.

The http://www.vandykerifles.com/tactical-supermag-338.htm#bill
seem to fit that to a tee! :thumbsup
