What do you think about the .338 Lapua?
You know as a long range shooter its a platform that I should love. But I don't. Let me say this I have shot less than a 1000 rounds of .338 Lapua out of a Accuracy International rifle. The round seemed to float around a bit more than it should and the drop was .... well ok but not anything spectacular. This is kind of like debating a TT GT versus a whippled GT. It comes down to personal preference and what you want to do. For me rifles and cars hold a very dear place in my heart and if I could I would have a locker that would make the local SWAT teams a bit nervous but I resolved myself to buy "only the best for the task, not pretty or trendy just 100% quality". So when I start applying those very subjective factors I have to look at the numbers also.
Round Bullet weight (gr) Muzzle velocity (ft/s - m/s) Muzzle energy.
.50 bmg 700gr 2978 (907.7) 13971(18942.1)
.416 Bar 400 gr 3250 (990.6) 9380(12717.5)
.338 Lap 300 gr 2717 (828.1) 4919(6669.2)
.338 lap 250 gr 2970 (905.2) 4893(6634.0)
6.5mm Gr 108 gr 2700 (820)
I added the 6.5mm for reference there since the shape of the grendel and the .416 are very similar what is truly remarkable is that the Grendel is still supersonic at 1000 yards while the .338 Lap is dropping speed rapidly and goes subsonic sharply at about 1200 yards. Unfortunately I don't have muzzle energy numbers for the 6.5mm. However when you look at how they hit at 1000 plus yards the ballistic efficency of the .416 is superior. The selling point of the .338 is that it is still able of punching through soft body armor at 1000 yards which the Grendel will do just by the speed it is traveling.
At these ranges it comes down to shooter skill and to be honest I can register a head shot with a stock M-16 at 500 meters using Iron sights. Would I place my life on it ... yes and I have .... but would it be the tool I picked for the job. Absolutely not! When looking at this class of rifle it comes down to opening ground and still making that tight shot at those distances. Then it comes down to personal choice. Mine is obvious through the last post and I respect anyone elses choice if they placed thier life on it ... its their right.
Oh and for the record ... modern military snipers don't shoot at the head like in the movies. Its a too low a probability shot and their business is making the area safe for our guys on the ground. So really any rifle that can do a sub one minute shot at 100 yards repeatedly is a "good" sniper rifle. But just to be honest and reconfirm we are only debating differences in "super" rifles and in that area I really don't have an opinion on the .338 Lapua other than its just not my cup of tea ... baby! :lol
