I don't mean to hijack this thread, but have to respectfully disagree with Ralphie regarding the fate of Mk II GT40 No. 1047. To the best of my knowledge, it was not destroyed by the 1967 Le Mans crash. As late as 2007, I exchanged e-mail messages about it with GT40 historian Ronnie Spain, spoke with Ronnie about it when he stayed with me, and was shown photos that he took of the car when he visited it in Japan in 2004. In 2007, 1047 was in the Finish Line shop in Nevada for some work. Now, new information does seem to surface from time to time about the identities of the much-raced Mk II GT40s, so maybe something has come up recently that sheds a different light on 1047, but at least as of 2007, the original 1047 seemed to still be with us.
Also, 1031 is now called "1031/1047" by its owners, the Collier Museum. See the discussion of this car at <www.racingicons.com>.
For some reason, Mr. Spain (in his book entitled "GT40 - An Individual History and Race Record", a book that I admire very much) seems to think the car driven by Ronnie Bucknam/Paul Hawkins as entrant number 57 was P/1047 (Light Blue/Black Stripes), a Mark IIB entered by SAI, and that the car driven by Frank Gardner and Roger McCluskey as entrant number 5, a Holman & Moody entered Mark IIB, was P/1031 (Gold/White Stripes). (ref. page 99)
He states (ref. page 230) that P/1031 "...was wrecked in the infamous Ford pile-up during the night." The crash that night involved car numbers 3 (Andretti/Bianchi Mark IV J-7 - Bronze/White), 6 (Schlesser/Ligier in P/1015 - White/Red-Black), and 5 (Gardner/McCluskey in P/1031 - Gold/White). However, as seen in the picture in the website you referenced (
www.racingicons.com) showing the car at the subsequent Rheims 12 Hour race shows the light blue/black stripes on P/1031, identified as GT40P#1031/1047 MkIIB(
http://www.racingicons.com/gt/finish.htm). Thus, I submit that Mr. Spain is slightly in error with regard to this vehicle, as it is clear that the "original" P/1047 was not light blue with black stripes.
I also reference their article which details the restoration of P/1031 -

As to the whereabouts of the original P/1047 (driven by Gurney/Grant in 1966), I have not researched whether it's chassis was eventually found and restored. However, I submit that the Gurney/Grant GT40 P/1047 was the Gardner/McClusky #5 gold/white stripe vehicle involved the '67 Le Mans crash.
I also refer the readers to the "World Registry of Cobras & GT40's," 4th Edition, pages 996-997 (P/1031) and 1006-1007 (P1047).
