Only downside is that dyno runs can be harder on the mechanicals then normal use.

I never thought this was the case. Can you explain?

I think that dyno runs are very "artificial".
I'm not speaking of the actual "numbers", but rather that they produce a scenario that most street cars will never see.
Cars are tied down in a manner that their suspensions will be compressed.
Tire and roller contacts may "slip", allowing for RPM and driveline loading that the car might not normally see on the street.
Unless you are doing some form of "racing" most cars are not subject to multiple high RPM or redline runs.
Believe me, I'm not against the use of the dyno for specific purposes, but they are not without their mechanical downsides.

I guess I'm in the minority. My cars routinely see redline. Often. Idle to redline is the normal operating range.

I am quite sure most cars see redline/rev limiter in 2nd gear regularly. sometimes not fast enough with shifting :driving:
