does this mean that if pump goes bad the entire tank requires replacement?
and if so why would they engineer it that way?

There is a good description of the "ship in a bottle" tank in the book the Ford GT the legend comes to life. In a nutshell space requirement was a big reason. Bonus points were weight distribution, lower centre of gravity, less fuel foaming/more stabilzed fuel level during hard driving and compact unit.:thumbsup

There IS access into the tank.
If you remove the console, shifter, and park brake lever, there is a bolted down plate that can be removed for access to the fuel pumps, vapor line, and electronics. It's a pain in the butt to work on, but everything inside the tank should rarely or never need servicing or repair. (been there, done that a few times) :thumbsup :thumbsup

So, if the electronics fail inside the tank, would it then be called shit in a bottle? :eek

Google "2004-01-1252.pdf" and you can get a bit more detail. Specifically fig. 29. It's a pdf file on the powertrain.

"2004-01-1257.pdf" has detail on the GT's cooling system.
