You should call Les Gray in Tempe, AZ (I will PM you with his phone number). He is a Pantera and ZF/RBT expert - owns a car with a very interesting background. Les rebuilt the RBT in my SPFGT40, and I was very pleased with his work. He's a terrific guy who lives and breathes Panteras!

I have a DeTomaso, pretty car, horrible driver, bought it right.
Don't expect to have a FGT driving likr with a Pantera, they are primative and of course an old design

If you want primitive, call the numbers that BONY gave. If you are willing to spend more $$$, I would call Steve Wilkinson at (562) 634-3434. Steve's claim to fame is installing 4 cam modular ford V8's. He may know of a good car like that that someone is interested in selling. I know that he has two cars in his shop right now that are installing actual Ford GT motors in -- one of them is actually having the Ricardo transaxle installed as well. In other words, Steve knows what he is talking about -- a great resource.

What Bony says is essential when buying a Pantera. It is usually advisable to buy the best one you can and not one that you intend to fix up. Unless you are skilled the cost to replace rusted body panels is darn expensive. A great source of knowledge on Panteras is available on the Detomaso forum at http://realbig.com/detomaso/ There is a guy called Mike Drew who has inspected quite a few and would be a great resource.
In the Pantera community modifying cars is widely accepted, You can find anything from a restored stocker to a huge horsepower car with wings and flares. A guy is currently having a Whippled Ford GT motor and Ricardo transaxle installed in his. There is a recent discussion on expected prices in the forum.
I own a Pantera currently. You should also contract your closest Pantera club chapter (POCA) for great info and contacts.

Call Guy Trigaux in Simpsonville, SC. He 's the expert - he raced one at Le Mans in the early eighties. 864-901-8149. He and his son run a nice resto shop - and Guy flies "Yaks" for fun. He just serviced all the "World Wide" super cars.

I LOVE my Pantera but it is indeed old technology. When we went through mine we updated EVERYTHING but it is still hot, rough, noisy, stiff etc. It is clear after driving the FGT even more. The FGT is smooth and quick and unbelievable. Clearly old tech vs new.

Wow, if true that car almost has fewer miles than EP's FGT! But for that price I would be tempted to kick in a little more and get another FGT so I would have two like the Moose's

That's amazing miles ! But probably not much of a turn key driver. I bought mine with only 28k original miles and found even then it was leaking from every gasket ! Few miles on a car like that mean the seals get very dry. Likewise, I've seen Pantera's with over 100k that are continually being updated and run awesome.
The big decision with the Pantera is whether to leave it stock or not. This is the only car I've known that doesn't seem to appreciate if left stock. Stock is definately old tech but the car has such a large stream of high tech updates that, if done right, make this car AWESOME to drive. Mine is heavily modified and I've never regreted it. It has such potential that it's almost a shame to leave it stock. I've seen 200 mph Pantera's run in the Italian Challenge in the Pocono's. Maybe not as sophisticated as the Ferraris and Lambos but a thrill non the less!
No matter what, cooling updates are a must ! :thumbsup

I've had several Pantera's, two very heavily modified. I switched to Vipers back in 98 and never looked back.
I'd say only buy one from a VERY reputable source as these cars are prone to rust in some of the least obvious and extremely difficult (read EXPENSIVE) places.
If I were looking, I'd call Dennis Quella at Pantera Performance.

I was scanning a few pics for another project and ran across this old pic of my Pantera.
Sold it back in 1988 to fund the start up costs for my new business, but it was fun while I had it.
Rust was always an issue and mine was no exception... we battled it from day 1.

I have to say when it comes to looks the Pantera and Ford GT40 are my favorite cars! Never thought I would own either, now I own one of them. :biggrin
