I was at a dealership and saw a gt on display. Had a penny sized black area on the circled area of the photo (not the actual car I saw)

This is not a usual area of rock chip. What causes this? Just a bad paintjob from Ford 17 years ago?

On my clamshell, on the driver’s side, the aluminum at the leading corner of the wheel arch was pinched out during fabrication (not on the passenger’s side). It scratched the paint.

The scoop was unbolted and repaired perfectly.

Yes, I smoothed the pointy corner out to prevent a recurrence.

Put a piece of clear film there to protect it. That scoop came from the factory with a piece of clear film at the rear corner for that reason. Just extend it, or add another peice. This is the thick stuff, not the thin PPF stuff.

You can also adjust the rubber bumper at the latch up a couple millimeters to make sure it doesn't hit. After 17 years, that's starting to compress.

Is it a deal breaker?

No. Just have someone who knows these cars do a PPI and make sure it's not because something else is bent.
