First, Timmy is OK :) but today he has had an allergic reaction to what we think may be food. Our next door neighbor who is a General Practitioner came over and suggested that the rash/hives that broke out look like they came from something he would have consumed.

Stephanie and I thought that the reaction might be from his pet rat, because sometimes when the rat scratches him, he breaks out where she scratched him????

Well, just when we think its about to go away and we have it under control, he broke out again tonight???????? We have compiled a list of what he has consumed today prior to the break outs...

Breakfast:
cinnamon toast
a little bit of black tea (stephanies)
He did have his bear and blanket that was around his rat the night before

Lunch:
cheese burger (cheese) ?????
fries
apples
a little bit of my sprite
apple juice
*Broke out shortly after we got home

Dinner:
Macaroni and Cheese
Whole Organic Milk
*Broke out shortly after dinner (noticed while getting ready for a bath)

In total: Timmy broke out severely 3 times and it settle each time but shortly after any meal today, he broke out and was itchy....

What's up?????

His breathing is good and we know to watch his breathing...

What we have given him is:
1. Hydrocortisone anti-itch cream
2. Kids Benedryl

Thanks in advance you guys :)

I personally LOVE milk.

However:

Click on the allergy link.

There is nothing worse than watching your child suffer. Best wishes.

We did the "grid" on our first child to find out his allergies. It's tough to watch them go through the test. But for us, it was worth finding out potential allergens and severity.

I'm no medical doctor, and opinions will vary on best diagnosis, and best methods.

I have a friend with wheat and dairy intolerance - it seems ever more prevalent these days.

An allergy specialist would find the problem quickly.

If he is showing signs of food allergy - why not cut nuts out completely right now as a precaution? This means sesame nuts on hamburger buns too. I'm probably being overly cautious, however it's worth finding out exactly what's going on.

Keep us posted and hope Timmy is not to alarmed by what's going on.

Stunts, I love ya, but a pet rat? :ack Can't you be normal parents and get the kid a dog or a cat? Hell, I'll ship you one of our English Setter puppies and start you guys off on bird hunting!:banana
Hope the little guy is feeling better.

djs: :) yes, I agree with you and I am no rat guy myself... but he fell in love with the movie Ratatouie (spelling) and wanted a RAT... we put some tasks to him and he completed them and did some learning on the way and earned his rat... Now the rat in question happens to be very cool... kind of like a lap dog in a way... comes to her name, snuggles with you and my opinion has changed about rats or at least this particular rat anyways.. Timmy does currently have a Sheppard/collie dog, 2 horses and a fish to go with his rat, but I like the sound of your offer ;)

You guys, I will check on those sights and I thought that maybe I had narrowed it down to cheese or dairy as a whole. But his diet or food patterns haven't changed and this came on so sudden???? He's asleep now and for today, no dairy and possibly make an appointment to go see his doctor.

I'll keep you posted :)

Funny thing is, first thing I thought of as to who to contact for some advice or opinion, was this forum... gives me peace of mind..... THANKS :)

We hope Timmy gets better soon! My middle son had a strange reaction when he was Timmy's age, we had him to three hospitals before they diagnosed him with a sulpha alergy. His bubble bath had sulphites and sulpha and he broke out in these strage donut-shaped hives.

My middle boy had same reactions to Alleve and Calamari of all things. Benadryl (sp?) worked wonders.

at 1 year old my daughter became alregic to 75% of all foods (basically soy is all she could eat). We did the Alergist test thingy and she got shots for 7-8 years. she just recently could stop taking them. Take you son to a Alergist and have them do the tests.

If it was the rat, he would probably be allergic to all pet dander. If it's a food allergy (a true food allergy) or an intollerance (not the same as an allergy), you would be probably be seeing signs of diarrhea or colic. You need to see an allergist and do allergy testing. They still do the old skin scratch grid tests on the back, but most commonly serological immunology testing is where they start now. To get an idea, go to the Quest or LabCorp lab testing sites and look for the hundreds of testing panels they offer. Get an appointment with a good pediatric allergist. Get a very good family history from both sides concerning allergies cause they'll want that. Allergy shots are still given, but if it's something that could be life threatening (i.e. cause a shock situation), you'll need to carry Epipens (epinephrine) at all times.

Thanks you guys for checking in with me and sorry to not have reported earlier.

About a week after the breakout, we had Timmy take a blood test as our Pediatrician thought it to be the better of the 2 tests to take. He was scared at 1st and mommy couldn't go as then I would not only have to take care of him, but I would also have to take care of her as well :)

He was very nervous and as soon as the needle entered his arm, he screamed, as he should. I held him tight and said to relax and that it shouldn't hurt anymore now that it is in. Timmy assessed the situation, stopped the crying, gave a giggle and said, you're right daddy, it doesn't hurt :)

The nurse then instructed Timmy to stop making a fist, he did and the blood began to flow. They took out 3 viles of blood and Timmy was very intrigued by the whole process :)

I was very proud of my little man that day and I took him to the lego store where I got him General Grevious' and his ship :)

So on a scale from 1-6 with 6 being the worse, this is what the blood test tells us:

4 Olive trees
3 Walnut tress, Elm Trees
2 Alder Trees, Mnt. Cedar Trees,Oak Trees

2 peanuts, corn, sesame, wheat,Johnson grass, ragweed, Mugwort, Russian thistle, pigweed, Bermuda grass, Timothy grass
1 walnuts, soybeans

4 cat
2 dog

He hasn't had a break out since, but I do question if the breakout could of happen due to stress because it was the 1st week of a summer session to a school he'll be entering in the fall. It was pretty intense and a drastic change then that of what he was use too ???????

Thanks guys :)

Adrenaline shots are common "quick fix" for allergic reactions. I wonder where you could get him a quick adrenaline fix? hmmmm, I wonder? :skep

Stunts, stress may activate asthma, but not so much allergies. If stress did it, Special Ed Sims would be dead by now. Talk to him at the Rally. Don't start any old wives tales.
