"IL Insider: Ford Set To Unveil Monster Mural of GT, Shelby GT500

Date posted: 08-01-2006

DEARBORN, Mich. — Camilo Pardo, Ford's chief designer, is hard at work on a huge mural of a red 2006 Ford GT and a blue 2007 Shelby GT500, that will be unveiled on August 9 here.

Sources told Inside Line it will hang on the outside of the Ford Conference and Event Center, which is across from The Henry Ford museum, for several months, and is being described by the automaker as the "largest mural ever of the two iconic vehicles."

The unveiling of the mural coincides with what Ford describes as the largest gathering of GT owners ever, on August 11 and 12. The gathering could be seen as part celebration and part wake, since Ford spokesperson Marisa Bradley says the GT is slated to end its production run in the next couple of weeks.

Pardo, who usually works on canvas, is painting the mural on weather-resistant vinyl, after completing a digitized version of the mural this week. "We do have the option to sell it, because it technically belongs to the company," Bradley said. "I'm assuming someone would love to buy it. It's a one-of-a-kind piece."

What this means to you: If you have the space for a giant rendering of these two Ford performance cars, get your money out. But we're going to draw the line at buying the oversize image of Dieter Zetsche — "Dr. Z" — that adorns the outside of Chrysler headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan. "
