gulf blue paint formula help

Guys I am pulling my hair out trying to get a formula for the Heritage Gulf blue paint code (GL). Strangly several paint shops have come up empty, the main PPG home office said there is no formula and had done a scan and given us the formula from that point (way off). The local paint shop scaned the bumper with less then good results. I am doing the bumper delete and need to paint a small panel that goes under the tips. The Ford dealers are clueless even after contacting Ford in Detroit. I searched the threads and can find all kinds of info on the orange but only reference to the code GL with no other info on the actual formula. I called a couple of people referenced in the threads and ether they didn't have a formula or they no longer were at the dealership. i have tried the touch up color part number and it does not help. the painter is tinting and retinting and he can't quite get it. If anyone has successfully been able to match the blue please help. I need a paint formula. Thanks. Bob Gaines

I found this on the forum, posted by spirit (Search "For Heritage Owners"), but It may be what Saleen used on the mustang. Hope this helps:

Here are the manufacturer's codes for the following:

Heritage Blue Paint: BASF WH738989 - Manufacturer BSAF

Epic Orange Paint: BASF WH731465 - Manufacturer BSAF

Black Pin Stripe Tape: 72602 - Manufacturer 3M

I found that in one of the threads also but when you enter the number into the BASF data base it comes up as "source not found". it is crazy. Thanks for the effort. The painter at the Shop were the car is gave up for the night and went home. I am still hoping that some one has the info out there and is willing to share with a fellow enthusiast.

that part number is the touch up paint number and it doesn't cross over . I have used the gulf blue and heritage blue in all searchs but thank you for the effort.

I talked to you the other day and the touch up paint Ford part number you gave me did not cross over. I appreciate your willingness to help however . I will call Monday to see if you have a lead on a formula. Thank you.

Aren't the paint codes on the plaque on the B pillar and listed in the service manual (at least the '06 manual)?

Yes they are. I found that paint code " GL" in my case easy enough but that isn't the formula to make the paint . The code is supposed to lead you to the formula which is what i need to make up the paint. It is a mystery which probably has to do with a low production. If you reread my first post you will see what I have gone through after the initial finding the paint code "GL". Thank you for your interest.

Heritage Blue, Code GL, is unique to the Ford 2006 Paint Codes and only used on the Ford GT.

The Ford Part Number given in the Motorcraft Chemicals and Lubricants Catelog is PMP-19500-7138A

I appreciate the info but that seems to be the part number to the touch up paint only and doesn't cross over to a paint formula. Thank you for the effort.

Just a thought

Might be silly statement, but what about contacting Saleen?

Heritage Blue Paint: BASF WH738989 - Manufacturer BSAF

Epic Orange Paint: BASF WH731465 - Manufacturer BSAF

Black Pin Stripe Tape: 72602 - Manufacturer 3M

I took these codes to my paint store a few months ago and had both the orange and the blue mixed to use for touch-up. I used both colors on a couple of spots, then wet sanded them flat, and they matched perfectly. I can't even tell where I did the touch-up. The store I took the codes to was "The Paint Store", (949) 364-6121, in Laguna Niguel, California. They specialize in auto paint and supplies only. I also ordered the pin striping noted by Spirit, and that was a "dead on" match too. Basically, I don't recall what they did, but they did use those codes to get it right. So maybe you can call them on Monday, and ask them to explain how they would mix the paint.

Another thought would be to contact Saleen. We just removed my door and are sending it to Saleen for the Gurney Bubble. Bryan Chambers at Saleen told me last week that not only do they look up the paint code but they look at my rotation number for the day the car was built and even get a closer match to the color when they are doing the Gurney Bubbles and repainting the doors. So, you could call Bryan @ (248) 743-4800x36406. If you have trouble reaching him, call Christina @ (248) 743-4876, that is her direct line at Saleen, and she is usually more available.

Thank you ,for the BASF codes and contact info. I currently have been working with the BASF codes. When the local auto body paint stores (several)look up the codes in the data base it comes back as "search not found " almost as if they were taken out. I plan on calling BASF direct on Monday morning and if I can't get anywhere i will call the contact at Saleen you provided . Thank you very much for your effort.
