I hesitate to tell you my experience with Venture Shield and Sticker City, but feel I should in order that I may prevent any GT owners from going through what I went through...
Three years ago, I got a Dodge Magnum SRT8 in Brilliant Black, and got info on Sticker City by seeing their ads on the LotusTalk forum, and noticing that the owner drove an Elise. I researched protective film, read about 3M's products, and decided that's what I wanted. Sticker City was listed as a 3M installer, so I made an appointment.
When I got there, the 3M product was pooh-poohed as being last year's tech, and subject to yellowing and other problems, and I was told that the new hotness was something called Venture Shield. Somehow I let myself get talked into a full set, mirrors and headlights included.
To be fair, this car lives outside, and it's a black metallic paint (worst case scenario), but still... within six months, the Venture Shield looked like arse, yellow, thick-looking, just awful. The headlights were so cloudy and full of bubbles within the first year that I'm surprised they pass light. From the end of the first week, the film's edges became visible in any light, and pretty soon it looked like one of those black+white cookies at the deli... like it had had its nose dunked in chocolate milk!
I was so embarrassed by my epic fail at picking the right film that I decided to remove it. I use tons of 3M adhesive products that never leave any residue, so I broke out the heat gun on a sunny day and went to town....
.... what an unbelievable mess. The Venture Shield's adhesive failed to release, despite various temperatures and conditions (indoor, outdoor, in sun, in shade, etc...), and over the course of three days I wound up with all of the film removed, but an almost complete layer of adhesive residue all over the front of the car... you know when you try to pull a sticker, and the sticker comes off as a piece of shiny plastic, leaving ALL of the adhesive on the surface? That, believe it or not, is what happened to me. All over the front of a black car. In some spots, the Venture Shield actually removed paint with it, in chunks about an inch long along the front lip... totally fubar.
I felt like (ok, I AM) an idiot... both for letting myself get talked out of the 3M product, and for failing in such an epic manner at removing the Venture Shield cleanly.
It took two days of "thumb work" to get all the adhesive residue off.... Goo-Gone, Tarminator...nothing worked except Cali sun and hard rubbing with the thumb... the entire front of the car.
I still have the Venture Shield film on my headlights, all yellow, cloudy, and full of bubbles.... they will probably have to be replaced. I'll see if I can upload a pic to this thread tomorrow to show what I'm workin' with.
Long story long, I had the worst possible experience with Venture Shield as recommended and installed by Sticker City.... I can't speak from experience about other products, but I'm looking elsewhere next time.
Syco, I hope that stuff comes off cleanly... good luck!
Anybody have a recommendation for protective film OTHER than Venture Shield?
(... or a release agent that works on their adhesive?)
