This morning I was reading the Sports section of the L.A. Times (only section with credibility) and came across a 4" x 6" advertisement from Mercedes Benz of Anaheim.
The car pictured was called a "2008 McLaren SLR Convertible" and while I could not tell you if it was an 08, or even a roadster, it was definately an SLR.
Splashed across the ad under the car was "SAVE $125,000 OFF MSRP" :eek
Anyone seen a car advertised for such a discount under MSRP?

"Story" car, perhaps???

maybe used?

Probably not guys. The SLR Roadsters sticker for over $500k. A $125k discount to get rid of a $500k car thats been sitting on the showroom for a year is not unlikely on that car.

Good time to buy a car. Lousy time to sell one.

The discount is the same as paying 30,000 for a 40,000 msrp. Perhaps a great deal, but those deals are out there. :cheers

Speaking of great deals, I met a gentleman this past Sunday who got the deal of the century about 2-3 years ago. He bought a genuine, origional, 1966 Dodge Coronet 2 dr post >HEMI, 4-SPD< car off a car lot (about 50 miles from me ) for a FRACTION of what it's worth!

They guy who owned it previously - are you ready for this? - HAD >TRADED IT IN< on a new pickup!!!!!!!!!! :eek:willy:willy:willy

I CANNOT believe that:
1 - Any classic Hemi car owner wouldn't know what his car was WORTH, or that,
2 - Any CAR DEALER would not know the value of something like that when it came in on trade!

Pockets N-E-V-E-R runs across a deal like that!!!

Is that why they are empty? :lol

But us car dealers, are always ready to make a deal. Cash always talks!!!

I traded a 55 tbird from the original owner in 1995 on a Crown Victoria.

And we had sold the car new to the family. No hastles here is the deal.
:cheers

it's used. Houston dealers do this trick a lot in their ads. that and the "80% of MSRP"...get it?

Question here is does any one want a new or used SLR for $375K. That's the bottom line.:bored

MB offered a similar 100k off SLR coupe's when they started to stop moving off the showroom floor...which in turn instantly devalued existing SLR's... McLaren don't care, as their contract is to build the cars, not sell them.

I never understood the SLR. It came out in 2003...not far after .com bust

What was its downfall?

-Ridicluous pricing of build contract with McLaren?...did they get exchange rates wrong

-How does it cost $500K to build any car in 2002..when McClaren is selling their exotic in 2010 for $200K

Critical destruction of value decisions:

-No Gullwing doors...and loss of historic equity-value
-Auto Transmission
-Shared nose with $40K SLK
-Carbon Fibre Chassis
-Dealer chassis rack for $100K to sell SLR
-Front-centered engine/weight dynamics.

Its amazing, M-B with decades of experience in negotiating vendor/supplier contracts, a storied race team and its own inhouse AMG unit...chose this track. My sense is it can be traced to one person who made this a pet project...or white elephant.
