Whipple Making Noise, please help me to ID it

Yes, we'll be taking it apart, but nothing failed, it's getting a noise, blower operates fine. I'm 99% sure one of the rear bearings is causing the noise, which is only the outside of the bearing race that is pressed into the housing, it's teflon strips help reduce noise.

'Bad bearing was my origional thought as well - not that it matters!:lol 'Just curious to find out if that actually IS/WAS the pblm.

ITS NOT A BAD BEARING!! Noise is from the bearing bore in the housing, either too tight or too loose, which we will see. Has no effect on life of SC, performance or anything else.

well I got the new compressor housing from dustin last week and after working on the car all yesterday taking off the whipple and replacing the bottom plate, inlet plate, the front drive and idler bracket(which was a pia to do all that) and puting the new unit on the car, to my dismay the chirping is still there, so it was a frustrating day, on a postive note I got to install the short shifter while I was at it(again thanks to shadowman for all his help) I spoke to dustin he is sending me a new front drive for the new whipple and a new belt, Im starting to think it may have been the belt all along. so once again I have to take the whipple off and do everyting over again.:thumbsdow

I am quite curious to hear what you find regarding the belt. As I shared earlier....I had a chirping a little after I first took delivery of my ride. The dealership replaced the belt and the noise was gone.....until just recently.
 
I had some time this past Thursday to try some of Shadowman's recommendations for addressing the chirping. My ride has been sitting for about a week or so. As one can imagine.....there wasn't any chirping at start up (typically this is what happens only after bringing it in to the dealership :bored).

I decide to see about this again the next morning.

The chirp had resumed it's chorus at start up (typically this would happen ONLY after I had picked the car up from the dealership (and the swearing would start)).

I apply soap to the belts as recommended...and the chirp goes away in short order.

Hmmmmmmmmm.

I didn't drive my ride over to Stillen's today, though I did chat with them about the chirping. The suggestion was that it might be some glazing of the pulley or belt. Stillen hasn't seen any of this, though they have had the subject brought to their attention before.

I don't think it could be the pulley because the cadence isn't quick enough...more likely the belt because of the cadence.

It is curious that the chirp wasn't there after sitting for a week+.

I had the same belt chirp when it was new but after about 1500 miles it went away. It was usually at idle and low rpms.
 
** If the noise goes awy when you drag a bar of soap along the edge of the belt while it is running then it is likley the belt **

well yesterday was productive , as mentioned before dustin sent a front drive and a new belt for the new compressor housing, as to eliminate all possibilities of the chirping, however I decided that instead of taking the sc off again and changing the front drive, to simply install the new belt. Im frustrated but extremely relieved to tell you that it was the belt all along. With the new belt the chirp was completly eliminated. Im a bit frustrated because I had to work all day on wednesday to take the sc off so I can put the associated hardware(bottom plate, inlet plate,front drive, and the pulley) on the new sc and reinstall it just to have the same problem all over again. This whole ordeal could have been easily avoided with just a belt swap. My frustrattion is exacerbated by the fact that initially I believed the culprit was the belt, but I was told that it could not have been the belt and that I would have to swap the sc. Im glad that the problem is solved, and I look forward to many happy memories with my new whipple. thank you, I hope this helps others that may have this problem.change the belt first

Thanks for the update Soroush! The chirping of my car comes and goes so I'm keeping a bar of soap in the car for the belt test when it happens again.
 
youre welcome bruce, it might be of some interest to you to know that i did the soap test on the belt and it did not work, the chirping was still there, i tried spraying other chemicals on the belt and most did not work, brake cleaner was the only thing that seemed to make the chirp go away a short while, I saw your video and the sound is identical to mine, I cant help but to think more than likely you can fix your problem with a new belt.

That sure sounded like a bearing to me. ('Just replayed the vid and I STILL feel that way!) 'NEVER heard a belt make a sound like that B4.

Would you like me to send you the video on a DVD w/ 5.1 surround sound so you can listen to it more often? :lol Seriously, thanks for your input, the damn circket sometimes is there and sometimes it's not. I think I'll start w/ a replacement belt and go from there.
 
Too bad IMHO the changing the supercharger belt is the hardest thing about the installation! If you have noise and the belt can be tighten, you might try that 1st. It would be a lot easier.

No more crickets

My Gen 2 Whipple has been chirping since day one and after 1500 miles it has gotten progressively worst. Like others I could make the noise go away by lubricating the belt (I used brake caliper grease). I little dab would get me through the day, but it always returned the next day. The source of the chirping was the belt /tensioner pulley interface. I received a new pulley and belt. I replaced the pulley first with no effect. Replacing the belt fixed the problem but WHY.

My guess is that the labels/markings on the back of the belt and/or its finish is the culprit. After 1500 miles the markings/labels showed only minor wear. The new belt had similiar markings but you could rub them off with your thumb. The only difference between the belts is the way they are marked and the finished on the back of the belt.

Scientific deduction: If you can rub the markings off, your probably ok.:biggrin
