Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh....................'According to the patent filing, “damping free inertia forces” are created, which should reduce the vibration of the inline-four-cylinder to the level of a six or eight piston engine'

"...while increasing the number of monkey-motion components to the point where the weight of same reduces the h.p. output of the 4 cyl to that of a 2 cylinder"...or something like that. :skep

The whole concept is obviously 'beyond my pay grade' as Spirit would say.

Now, this explanation makes sense even to me:

"Its a method of obtaining a controlled variable compression ratio. Can also be used to change the piston acceleration curve and dwell time, greatly effecting the combustion process and flame propagation.

Much like variable cam timing, this would result in much broader torque curves and a wider range of RPM where peak efficiency can be obtained."

Thanks, JC. :wink

From an engineering/optimization standpoint, it looks like it might be a good "tool" to allow for variations of engine parameters - stroke, piston speed, compression , etc - without having to completely tear down an engine and replace parts.
