What is best winch for inside trailer?

I need to place a winch at the front of a 20' Pace trailer, since this trailer has no side door. Definitely want the cordless controller. It will be used on a coupla other cars in the same weight range, so 4000 lbs would seem like plenty. And does everyone just put a 12 v. battery alongside the winch rather than going to the trouble of getting power from the towing vehicle? The Warn winches seem overkill, since they are deigned to survive 'outdoors'. Cost is a consideration. Thanks, Redeemed

I just went through this with my 20' footer. I installed the winch up against the front wall with a fabricated plate so it would/could be anchored through the floor into the i-beam x-member of the frame. The winch I purchased has a capacity of 2500 lbs and works fine. I think I paid $100 or so for it on sale. For power, I installed a yellow-top (RV) optima battery beside it with a ground to the frame (same bolt for the winch mounting plate ) and a pwr feed tied into the hitch pwr. As it is critical to keep the battery charged during extended periods of non-use, I installed a non-expensive ($35 )solar battery maintainer on the roof and hooked it up to the battery...it has a brain just like a regular battery maintainer so it won't overcharge. My trailor is stored outdoors so it receives plenty of sun to keep the battery fully charged at all times. BTW, I also hooked up my pwr jack the same way...this way the jack works without being hooked up to the tow vehicle no matter how long it's been sitting.

Dear Cobraguy, the solar maintainer is a great thought! Do you have a source and name for your winch? And did you get the cordless remote controller? Thanks

and same for solar maintainer

Sorry, I don't remember the name of either off hand but a similar winch could be picked up (I'm sure) at any auto parts store. I didn't buy a 6 or $800 unit as that level of quality is probably overkill....afterall, I will only use it occasionally and with the fgt and similar cars will likely never come close to maxing out the unit. Because it is a cheapy I couldn't get the cordless remote so I just extended the wiring by 30' so I can stand outside and operate it if req'd. As for the solar charger, I picked it up at an RV store so I paid alittle more for it ...I've since seen them for $29.00. I think Wal Mart even sells them. I have one in my chevy pickup which is parked in Airport parking lots for a month at a time ...It's the kind that plugs into the cigarette lighter and I just place it on the dash and store it under the seat . It's only around 4"x14"x 1/2" thick. I wouldn't be without it.

I just this week bought the Deltran 5 watt solar tender charger for my trailer this week, after seeing them at SEMA. I got it at Amazon, wich was discounted off what Deltran seels them for direct:
