All the begininng letters and numbers in the VINS start the same.

But the two letters/numbers before the Y change.

Example:

16y then followed by the serial number
86y
x6y

I get the 6 or 5 before the Y. That is the year

What does the 1, 8 or X in the example about designate?

Just curious as I could not find that it related to color or equipment

Check Digit

The number just before the model year in the GT VIN is a computer generated "check digit". It has no meaning with respect to options or equipment on the car.

A computer generated "check digit" of "10" is signified by an "X". The available characters for the check digit are the numbers "1" through "9", and the letter "X".
