Why can’t Ford bring back one of these nameplates to compete directly with the corvette?

Because "sports car" sales, even very loosely defined to include sporty cars (like Mustang and Camaro), get lost in the rounding off of revenue by the accountants.

^This. Another American 2 seat sports car would likely split the market to the point that neither car would sell in sufficient numbers to survive.

My impression is that Ford is focusing on how to survive the next 10-15 years where ICE's get taxed/shamed out of cost effectiveness and private ownership becomes passé.

2-seat sports cars are a luxury for better times.
