Replacement / spare chin spolier issues..

O.k., so I thought it would be smart to rorder a replacement chin spoiler to have on hand, just in case. Also assuming the $ for parts will increase...

So we rec'd it yesterday in a nice unopened / undamaged box & opened to inspect.

Everything looks good except there is a "wave" to the spoiler - as the leading edge comes around to the side / wheel area it takes a very noticeable bend up (3/8") then back down - on both sides:frown

Is it SUPPOSED to be like this prior to install?:confused

My gut tells me no, that this would most likely have to be heat-gunned into shape after install. BUT, I've had experience w/ older Ford chin spoilers that would not keep shape even after heat-gunning...

'Course, my gut also tells me that a part for a car like a GT really shouldn't have to be fooled w/ to fit / look proper.

Does anyone have any advice?

The Ford dealer said here would probably be the best / first place to ask as someone involved w/ production / engineering may be able to answer....

Thanks much!

I have a new one in the box down in my commercial storage space, Rod. I'll be down there this afternoon, so I'll check mine while I'm there & get back to you.

Chin Spoiler

I noticed a more pronounced bend in a replacement too. As compared to the one that came with the car.

Ford told us that there is supposed to be a "upward bend towards the middle of the spoiler".
And there was a "variance production factor" in the bend. :confused

So we put it on the car. Looks different but works fine.

You would think they had issues in production as well. Maybe someone from the pit crew can chime in on how they get it to fit so nice from the factory.

What is the part number for the replacement spoiler?

Yeah, I've noticed a slight upward bend in the middle on the 1 on the car (but the leading edge of the splitter still is horizontal / parallel to the ground) but lets just say if I put this replacement on, the leading edges around the curved parts on both sides are bent up - kinda like a splash guards - lol! Really, it kinda defeats the purpose IMO of a "splitter"...

Part # 5G7Z-17626-AAA

I have a spare as well. The leading edge is perfect but the under belly has a very slight warp. I think it will go away when it is installed.

How much was it and part #?

Some years ago I was trying to buy some trim from Ford and it kept coming dinged or scratched. I asked one of my old college friends working at Ford what was up with that? He said the stuff that is rejected from the assembly line was packaged for resale through distribution. People on the line didn't have time to mess with it and it had to be right so they toss it off to the side as rejects. I don't know if that was really true or if the suppliers now sort their stuff that way and we possibly get the seconds when we buy replacements parts. The GT plant looked pretty clean of material so maybe this whole scheme does not apply and the quality of some parts is just variable. Any large plastic part is going to be a challenge to be made and delivered consistant.

So, I went down there. 'Couldn't see anything like what you described on the one I have, Rod. (just FYI)

Thanks for replying guys, well, my dealer is taking the spoiler back & will continue to re-order until we get 1 that I'm satisfied w/. We've scrutinized the extra splitter to death & are 100% convinced that even mounting it to the car WILL NOT eradicate the warpage.

There's a good chance once it's mounted one may be able to correct it w/ a heat gun but I'm not willing to take that chance & besides I feel I paid for a new part that should be warp-free....

Note to all: Please inspect all extra parts! I was going to leave the splitter in it's unoped box in case I were to ever sell it but needless to say I'm glad I inspected it!

Now, I've got some other goodies coming in & will notify the forum if I find anything funny w/ them as well...:wink

Got the 2nd spoiler & it's a straight.. whew! Storage time.

The dealer I ordered from couldn't confirm if the first was supposed to be "wavy" & I think probably thought I was nuts - lol!

BUT I spoke w/ another dealer who seems to be THE GT dealer in our locale who confirmed they have ordered replacement splitters for other owners & also noted the "wavy" condition on some...

So, to make it short, these apparently do have some variation in manufacturing consistency. Definitely open & inspect all parts...

What is the cost of a replacement spoiler?
