Hi guys-

I've listed my Porsche 944 Turbo Cup factory race car on bringatrailer.com as an exclusive for two weeks- kind of an interesting site.

http://bringatrailer.com/2010/04/28/bat-exclusive-factory-1987-porsche-951-turbo-cup/

Anyway, this is one of nine Porsche factory race cars imported in 1987 for SCCA racing. I bought the car brand new, directly from Al Holbert's Porsche Motorsport North America and drove it home, roll cage and all. It has never been raced (but I did track events), and would be a perfect car for vintage racing or a very special car for track days.

(And yes, I might possibly consider trading up to a non-stripe GT that wasn't red, black or yellow.)

For reference, here's a photo I found of a car in Europe that shows how you could add period decals for vintage racing.

I drove one of those Factory 944 Turbo Club Sport endurance cars at the SCCA Escort 24 Hour event at Mid Ohio in 1986 or '87. The car was a blast to drive, but you had to prepare carefully for the turbo lag in certain places on the track. The Corvettes still beat us with all their torque, but it was a very enjoyable event none-the-less.

Oops, just realized I posted this in the wrong forum, don't hurt me Dave!

EDIT: Thanks for moving to the correct area!

I think you should trade and get back into a GT, rather than just sell outright.
Good luck. Looks like a cool car.

Hi Richard-

Thanks for the note.

Not sure which you drove, but as you probably know, the '86 cars were noticeably different from the '87's, which have revised suspension (with switchable ABS) and bigger turbo, etc. (In fact, one of these cars was used as the EPA test car for the bigger turbo in the 88/89 Turbo S street cars.)

I worked with John O'Steen at the time- he also raced one of the cars for the factory-supported teams. He told me the '87 cars could keep up with the Corvettes, but the Porsche's needed an additional fuel stop, killing their chances of winning.

BTW, I can certainly state as a fact that while this car may be slower than a GT, it is MUCH more fun on a track than a stock GT.

Back to the Future.

I always believed you would return to the FGT ranks. That would put the planets back into alignment. Good luck with this sale.

Here's an old article from Excellence on the cars.

OK, I know not many of you guys have any interest in 150 cubic inch 4-cylinder cars, no matter how cool they are, but I finally added period-correct livery (in the style of the European race series) to my never-raced Turbo Cup race car, and I think it came out pretty good!

Might even try a vintage race or two.
