Ok need an opinion here ....

Dont shoot snakes with fmg rounds snakes are hard to kill the head needs to come off.
While stationed on camp pendelton I had a snake under my jeep and we shot it with a clip of 45 acp and a short mag of .223 and the snake was still alive.

Ended up I put a blank in my m-16 and blew his head off with just the blast. Rattlers can strike about 1/3 of there body lenght so be careful.
As far as dischrging a firearm in the city Make sure you over emphize the fact you feared for life and as a last resort fired it is legal to protect yourself.

I shot my nebors (sp) dog after it bit me and nothing happened but thats a differant story.:willy
That's the beauty of the .22 with bird shot - easy to turn their heads into hamburger!

CCI makes a .45 ACP loaded with #9 birdshot. Should do the trick on all rodents and snakes, but unfortunately, much louder than .22 birdshot rimfire. They do make some subsonic cartidges in other calibers, but I doubt there is demand for subsonic varmint bullets.
DPGT, is that the Springfield XD and if so how do like it vs a 1911 .45?

Love the XD .45 ... went and shot today with the local pd we went through 500 rounds pistol each shooter and almost as much rifle. Compared to the 1911 is a tough one since they are so different in presentation. Old school vs new school. for direct reflex fire the xd is awesome on point and shoot. a LBC 1911 is still a great carry gun but I think in a straight fire fight I would want the xd since its better on follow on shots.

I agree with the CCI 45 being loud. thats what I used on the snake. Oh BTW ... ran another one over with the mower tonight so I would say I have a nest around here somewhere.

SO here is the setting. You live in a semi-rural area of houses that are all on one plus acre lots. The jacka$$ next to you has not built a house on his 10 acre lot and has let the grass grow to over three feet tall (in violation of city ords.).

Your five year old son is playing in the back yard when he is chased by a 6-7 foot long poisonous snake. He safely makes the back porch but when you look at the snake it raises its head and opens its mouth at you. The snake makes no effort to leave and charges aggressively at anything around it (within 25 feet). You live in a rural area but within the city limits of a township which "prohibits the discharge of a firearm without permit."

Do you:

Kill the snake with an ax and risk getting bit by a snake whose girth is the size of your forearm's meatiest part.

Shoot the snake with your trusty .45 acp.

Kiss the snake since you're a tree hugger.

Tell your son that the back yard is now the snake's home.

What do you do? Yes this was an event at my home today.

Take another good long look at that snake, open your heart and mind and then vote for it. It only wants to bring "change"for you and your son.:bored

"Hope and Change" :bs

DPGT "hoped" the snake understood the "change" the .45 ACP performed on the snake's noggin'.
DPGT thanks for comments on XD. Am looking into Colt Defender or Kimber Ultra, both compact 1911s, for your basic concealed carry, which 'ain't legal' here in IL. But, given where some of my biz takes me, like they say, it's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

I have the Kimber Ultra and IMO it is awesome. The tactical model has rounded edges for easy withdrawal and the precision with which they are built is second to none!

I agree with the D-gt the Kimber is an excellent CC firearm. I tend to lean towards the "heavy engagement" handguns simply from the mindset that when you've drawn that its your last line of defense and you're shooting the weakest weapon in the box. (as compared to a smg or long rifle). I still maintain that heavier is better mindset and if I could find a state that would let you CC an SMG .. I'd live there. :biggrin

My advice is go fire both and take a look at the xd subcompact in .40 ... just load it with Hornady TAP ammo. Thats a great for the dollar alternative to the Kimber. Good luck.

You SHOOT the stinkin' intruder!!!!!! THAT'S what you do! Treat THAT flippin' snake the way you'd treat a two legged one! CASE CLOSED!!!!

Good grief!!! There's an OBVIOUS diff between firin' a piece IN DEFENCE OF ONE'S SELF OR FAMILY and simply firin' th' dang thing fer funzies!!!! Any SANE jury wouldn't even convict ya of litterin' in this case! I mean, my aching back! GET REAL!

Besides...all dis is MOOT ennyway, right? Ya dunn picked th' varmit off instantainnypuss, didn't ya? :lol

Update:

So far in the last week or so we have gotten a ton of rain, the yard has about an inch of standing water on it and I have "dealt with" another three Rattlers. Anyone know of a bait, poison, trap or nuclear device that I can use to get rid of this nest that has to be around here somewhere.

Oh BTW a paintball gun ramped up to 400 FPS+ and rubber balls does an interesting amount of damage to a snake. 15 rounds per second sounds like a sub gun. Once immobile you chop off their head with machete ... another couple of snakes and I'll be asking for a good boot maker. :thumbsup

To attract rattlesnakes, have a Democrat fundraiser. These events usually attract snakes and rodents of various sizes rather easily.

Seems like lots of preaching to the choir...
Safe to ass-ume if there where any Democrats on the Forum they have choosen to be silent or left.

I am tempted to start a thread asking members to identify how they currently give back to their community. Examples such as Boy & Girls Clubs, Scout Leadership, elected official, service clubs etc.
Writing checks doesn't count. Nor posting on forums.

Ok.. Start another thread about guns

But, wouldn't responding to that in and of itself at least imply an admission that one had in fact TAKEN something from their community in the first place...? :skep :devil

(Steer clear of Fresyes, Pockets...or yur dead meat!)

We are all part of the system were taLking out.
I will leave it to you to reply or not. Normally folks that talk about it don't do it... Could be wrong, hope so!
Happy Father's Day!

4 times a year the government helps me give back to the nation. In my more generous times I have been known to give almost 50% of my income back to the "Country." The top Fed rate of 35% Of course we cannot leave off Medicare tax of 2.9% for the self employed. I an leaving off the SSI taxes of 12.4% since the stop after 102K (until Obama is elected). Those of us in Kalifornia have the pleasure to give a modest 9.3% state income tax, plus get to help the mentally ill with very small donation of an additional 1% tax on all income over 1 million dollars. Whatever I have left to spend I get the pleasure of paying the fair 8% to 8.75% sales tax with my post tax dollars.

Now, whatever you manage to save before you die, you can rest in peace knowing that you can help once again without any planning, or effort on your part, via the estate tax of only 46%. So don't worry about giving too much while you are alive. The government has your best intentions in mind and will help you give almost 1/2 of what you worked for after your death.

Somehow I feel I am not paying my fair share and the government seems to have different view on where the money should be used. So donate money to a variety of organization, some of which Bony also supports, such as 1199.org. Of course the government is there to help with your donations via the AMT tax that fairly reduces your deductions from charitable donations.

Maybe it is better to be non-productive so that I can collect my fair share from the work of others, via the earn income credit, food stamps, welfare, medical, aid to families with dependent children, etc.

Sometimes I wonder?

:confused

p.s. I am sure Pockets will have some good feedback on this post!

Writing checks, paying taxes is not giving back!
Coaching youths, working with your church, getting hands on. If you don't have and avenue for service you can't call yourself a complete man.

Based on your definition, I am less of a man than you are Bony and my wife is more of a women than most. She does a lot of hands on volunteer work for two different school systems, and other charitable organizations.

I guess I am acting out one of my sayings, "money can be replaced, but time can't."
