Not meaning to ask the stupidest question ever, but when is it correct to check the oil level? When the engine is off and the oil has had a chance to drain down, if it does at all being a dry sump system? Or when it is at an idle? After changing the oil and installing 9.5 qts when the engine is shut off it still isn't showing on the dip stick. Answers would greatly be appreciated. Jan.

You need to check the oil within I believe 30 seconds (it might be 60 seconds) of shutting off the engine.

Within 1 minute of shutdown. I usually open the clamshell after car is at operating temp. and have a rag handy, then I shut the engine off and check the level.

I generally open the clam after a run to aid cooling - particularly knowing that the vents are prone to warping.... When doing an oil check, I do it after a run, park the car (engine running) open the clam (take a peek to see if everything is as it should be, despite having no idea what to look for) turn the engine off and check the oil.

As above, I think it's within a minute that the book recommends.
