How does one even come up with a way to create an "illegal tire valve cap" in the 1st place...much less one that could POSSIBLY give your car a WINNING EDGE of such magnitude it'd justify the actions NASCAR took in this case??????! Absent a RATIONAL explanation from NASCAR regarding same, I'm at a total loss to understand the 'logic' it employed here.:frown

(Who would have dreamed ANY sanctioning body would even hold an INSPECTION on 'valve caps [beyond MAYBE verifying they were in fact ON each tire] - let alone have microscopic specs in the rule book regarding the darn things. :willy)

tire valve caps can be an issue of safety. but i am sure that is not the issue here. i am guessing they were modified to relieve pressure to maintain consistency.

what really blows me away (pun intended, lol) is the extreme penalty that nascar throws at the team for something that is not gonna make a difference between a win and a loss imo......

Then why only on the rears & not the fronts?

Besides, the 'VALVE itself ought to be the controling factor there, wouldn't you think? :shrug

Regardless, as you suggested, it seems awfully Mickey Mouse to me.

I thought innovations like these are what made successful racing teams?

Oh that is right, NASCAR wants to run a spec series with 40 "personalities" who can hawk corn flakes and detergent. :bored

Back in the 80's Steve went to Arizona for an indy lights race. He noticed that Dan Gurney's cars had one valve stem on the outside of the wheel and another on the inside...He walked up to Mr. Gurney and asked "Hey, what's the deal with the two valve stems." Immediately Dan held his finger over his mouth and said "shhh....no one else has figured it out yet but that second valve stem is a pressure relief valve...when the temps rise and the pressure increases that valve blows off the excess but still looks like a standard valve stem."

A good engineer/team owner will find ANYTHING to give themselves that extra advantage...

"Valve STEM"...not "cap".

This illustrates the point I was trying to make about the 'stem CAPS. The caps just SIT there. They regulate nothing. (Unless they're made out of something designed to "burst" and vent air thru a "cheaterized" 'valve, what "cheating" can possibly be done with 'em - at least to the level where it might actually make a diff that might win a race???)

Pockets - It's easy enough to google some of the key words in the original articles to find more articles and expand your knowledge. These were BLEEDER caps - not "just" valve stem caps. Bleeder caps are illegal - plain and simple..... it's not something that was made up the day of the infraction.

Well now, THAT makes sense. Why THAT critical lil' factoid wasn't mentioned in the subject clip is a mystery to me.

Incidently, I'm not unfamiliar with "bleeder caps". If THAT'S how they'd been described in the article, NASCAR's actions would have made sense. 'Shouldn't hafta Google diddley to find out what a reporter SHUDDA stated. I'm jus' sayin'...
