Hey Pilots...

500' instantly? Sounds like fun. Not eating before any flight lessons when it warm up......I guess I could always eat a banana as Chip said, but then the instructor will wonder why every time he looks over at me I'm always eating :shrug:lol Nice visual for you

Congrats on the flight. Nice pics. It is a shame that Megs field is closed now. It used to be one of the best airports in the country.

When do you launch again?

I asked the instructor yesterday about the whole Meigs field issue and he said the Mayor did that with the intention to build facilities on the island that would provide housing for all of the 2016 Olympics athletes if Chicago won the bid. I'm taking it with a grain of salt, but you never know when it comes to politics.

I might take to the air again today. I have a meeting with a different flight school in a little over an hour. I'm doing all of my research and considering the number of flight instructors, training aircraft, contacting some past students for feedback of their experience with that particular school, etc...

I am also considering that the flight schools I am currently researching are located at an airport that is the third busiest in the entire state of Illinois, only behind O'Hare and Midway. It's the busiest GA Airport in the state and O'Hare is very close by, so there is a lot of traffic and extra time spent getting away from that traffic and into the designated maneuver area. I'm finding that smaller GA Airports located further from O'Hare have better rates for rental and instructor time, so I am looking into those flight schools as well.

The most important thing for me is that all of my research isn't wasting anyone's time in case I decide not to pursue my private pilot certification. I can find out a lot over the internet and in cases where I stop by a school and ask questions it is usually because I was invited or because I am going to pay for air and instructor time that day.

Jason, take I-88 to Sterling for good lessons in an "open" air environment.

Is there a flight school around there or is that just the place to go for some breathing room in the air? :wink

I had a Vietnam Vet as my flight instructor. I was very nervous with my first class B airspace takeoff, he said don't worry no one is shooting at you! Kind of put everything into perspective.

Chunky style turbulence.

Gimbal,

When I was learning to fly back in 1978 my instructor was also a Vietnam veteran helicopter pilot. On a very hot day I complained about the turbulence after several jarring bumps upset our aircraft. My instructor calmly said, "We used to have big bumps just like that when I was flying in Vietnam, only they had big chunks of steel in them".

On a night flight I flew over what must have been an impromptu fireworks show (no FAA alerts on my flight plan). They were probably not as close as they looked, but it was still a cheek-clencher.
