Help, Failed Emission test!

Scooter Your P0445 code could be { slim chance } what happened to me. Look at the picture, Our filler neck assembly has a small vent line running next to the filler line.
If you look under the hood after removing the trunk liner you will see the location where the rubber hose connects the filler neck with the fuel tank and also you will see where the small vent line connects right beside it. I forgot to hook up my small vent line after i replaced the filler neck assembly and i got the P0445 code. Just for the heck of it check all of the connections involved with the filler neck to rule out the possibility of your code being caused by something as easy as that.

This got me thinking..when I fill the tank with gas I have a strong odor of spilled fuel, would this be fuel leaking from the broken seal or vent line?

I over filled #1079 once and smelled the same thing, and #1079 didn't have the 'filler pblm. So, what you're smelling is likely just the result of the over fill.

But, I still believe you're gunna need to replace the 'filler assembly.

Not to change the subject here but is it normal when I'm filling the tank I have to slowly fill the tank or the gas pump will keep shutting off on me. I try to turn the nozzle in different directions but cant seen to get it to flow any faster. I am careful when moving the nozzle in different direction because I know about he seal that can be damaged even though it sounds like it already is!

EP it is amazing that you filled 1079 once during your ownership! Assuming an optimistist MPG of 22 and a maximum usable tank capacity of 16 gallons, the most you could have driven 1079 is 16x2x22=704 miles and that is if you sold the car with an empty tank. :rofl

I found the same to be true & "solved it" by starting the flow of gas s-l-o-w-l-y & then gradually increasing it. That seemed to cure it.

You seem to have gotten much better mileage than most owners. Must have been your gentle right foot.

Scooter

As shared by several the filler neck will likely have to be replaced; you are welcome to call me as I PM'd you my phone number.

Now as for the difficulty in filling her; if this is the case at more than one pump then the odds are that a portion of the filler neck assembly came lose and is lodged within; NBD as this has happened to many and yet this would make very clear the need to repalce the filler neck assembly.

I have filled up at different pumps and have never been able to pull to fill lever more than half way without the safety shutting off.
I will call you tommorrow..Thanks!
You were correct about the Short Throw Shifter...well worth it!!! It was a bit of a fight to install it remind me to ask you a few questions about it.

OK progress report update! Reset codes, full tank of fuel topped off twice and 30 miles later I passed the test, the car is still surging a bit and trying to die out but doesn't seem as bad. I was able to look down into the fuel filler neck and can see the broken flapper hanging in there.
I really don't want to remove the fender or purchase a new filler neck since it hasn't been redesigned, is there any other option for me?

Someone once posted a way to fix without removing the fender.

Spdmnjay posted a fix where he took one from a new F150 and adapted it I think. Interesting post you might want to review.

Perfect, I drive a 2008 F150..I will use it for parts

No, it has to be one of the new F150's without the gas cap. Ford is putting them on many of their new models.
