Help, Failed Emission test!

I failed my IL emission test today....I guess the black tape I put over the Check engine light didn't hide it from there computer. The codes they gave me are PO455 and PO457. Originally I thought I was having the problem with the leaking gasket around the fuel neck but I did fill the tank up to the top and the light did not go out. Also my car stalls out sometimes when I pull up to a stop then restarts no problem.

Regardless, it 'sounds' like the filler neck pblm may have struck again. (I have no idea what those codes indicate..but, the symptoms you cite sound all too familiar...)

P0445 is for an evaporative emission leak (gross leak/no flow) and p0447 is for evaporative emission leak (fuel cap loose/off).

Scooter, move to another county. Only Chicago and St. Louis area counties make you do this. I passed mine without a problem last Fall. You should probably have it reset and then rush in with the car warm and have it checked.

Good advice Frank, but we're not all rich Doctors with multiple residences.

Clue....... if the fuel tank is "full" or below 1/4" then the evap system does not fuction aka test hence set codes.

So....... if this gal were to be used off the highway then I would say fill her tank to the brime...... reset the code...... exercise her 25-50 miles to reset the readiness codes (verify by checking that the P1000 code is not present) ........ top off her tank again and then .......

Thanks Shawdow, how do I reset the codes? Will the light go out after the reset?
Now IL wont give you your license plate registration until you pass so my plates expired last week. They said I could go to a IL facility and ask for a 7 day driving permit...unbelievable.

Any SCT or Diablo tuning/porting tool as used for a Ford will work and if you do not have access to one then Kragen, Checker, and even the smog place can reset them and then allow the 25-50 calibration process to begin. You could also purchase an inexpensive OBDII reset tool; I see them for under $30.

You can also pull the battery off-line for ten minutes to reset the codes. Although I don't think the codes will go back to an "all clear" status until it is able to run the evap test (I do not know this for sure).

Fubar .... this is an interesting thought.

I suspect that the OBDII system will set because the evap system will show as on line and then when she falls below 3/4 tank of fuel the monitoring system will randomly do a purge test at which point a code will be thrown.

Scooter; I await your results; please update me via PM

Thank you

So are you saying I can disconnect the battery(do I do that from under the front end?) and that will allow me to retake the test with the full tank of fuel?

So that would take care of this-----------------p0447 is for evaporative emission leak (fuel cap loose/off).

What about this---------------------------------- P0445 (is for an evaporative emission leak )(gross leak/no flow)

I suspect that both code are related

I do not know of disconnecting the battery will clear the code; Fubar made menton of this as such he may have experience with this. I alwasy clear the codes with the tool.

IMO you need a tool to clear the code and then to reuse it in 25-50 miles to confirm that the P1000 code is "not" present. The P1000 code will not trigger a light however will also not allow the test to be completed.

The IL smog test is pretty simple. You pull up, they don't have a clue what kind of car it is, you get out, they hook up the ODB port, look for any codes. If no codes, you pass and they give you a certificate. I've never had a car not pass, so I don't know what happens otherwise. I always make sure the car is at least warm after 20 minutes of driving.

My good friend DriveBy in the Chicago area I'm sure has some shady friends with a code reader/resetter despite the fact that he only owns one home but multiple garages (ha,ha).

Any Ford service dealer can reset the codes. Scooter, you haven't said if you've done any mods to the engine or tune.

Costco sells a $39 ODBII reader and code re-setter. Best money I spent at Costco and I have spent a bunch...

What did you need that for? Don't you have an SCT tuner? It can do that and more!

The SCT tuner is married to the GT. My Dad's cadillac was throwing some emissions codes that I wanted to clear.

I am not sure if the SCT would work for non-Ford cars, but maybe it can. However married or not it can still read and reset codes on other Ford cars.

Did not know that. I'll give it a try. I have Fords, Chevy, Dodge & Chrysler and Mercedes here.

Actually, Scooter, as the threads above indicate, the OBDII tool (which plugs into a standard connection port mandated by the Feds on all "new" cars and reads on-board computer maintence/failure/emission codes) is easy to find and can be readily purchased at most auto supply shops, etc.
You will need to get one (or borrow a friends) to clear the codes as I do not believe just disconnecting the battery will clear them.
But long term it looks like you may need to service the fuel filler neck to eliminate future code activations.

Scooter Your P0445 code could be { slim chance } what happened to me. Look at the picture, Our filler neck assembly has a small vent line running next to the filler line.
If you look under the hood after removing the trunk liner you will see the location where the rubber hose connects the filler neck with the fuel tank and also you will see where the small vent line connects right beside it. I forgot to hook up my small vent line after i replaced the filler neck assembly and i got the P0445 code. Just for the heck of it check all of the connections involved with the filler neck to rule out the possibility of your code being caused by something as easy as that.
