Just imagine what BMW is doing.

Just imagine what BMW is doing.

Running over bikers and catching on fire.

Owners should disconnect the power to the on star device!

It's a toothpaste box size unit on passenger side windshield, dealer has to remove

Look at the wiring diagram, hopefully it has its own dedicated fuse.

We won't be renewing wifey's subscription if this is where the outfit's going. (And it'll be totally disabled to boot.)

I wanted OnStar on wifey's car in case she needed instant assistance of any kind...and as a cell phone backup in the event she forgot her's (or its battery was dead, whatever). THAT'S ALL "ONSTAR" WAS S-U-P-P-O-S-ED TO BE FOR INITIALLY. But involuntarily providing info to "the man" (be he fed or local) or to the ins. co. - ON MY DIME TO BOOT - forgiddaboudit.

The "tattletale black boxes" that have been placed in new cars for the past several years are bad enough...but at least we're not paying a monthly/yearly FEE on those.

Well, there you go. Guess what I'm going to do tomorrow.

Thanks, JKD.

It's time that the consumer becomes able to collect a fee for information provided to data collection agencies - I think that a legal issue would support the consumer's right to sell or retain his personal information.

Do I see a class action suit here??

HMMM. The government bails out GM and becomes a vested owner and now they collect a lot of data with or without permission for sale to/use by persons unknown. What is next?

If u have a cell, this info is being collected by default by Tower operators regardless of what Cell makers do or promise

Ur cell moving is data

But once you cancel the phone service that's the end of it. OnStar evidently still tracks ya for God-only-knows-how-long AFTER you cancel. Besides, SO FAR AS WE KNOW the tower cos aren't selling info to whomever for whatever ('not saying they COULDN'T be, however). They DO track for L.E. in an emergency or criminal situation, but that's supposedly IT. ('Too naive, perhaps?)

Anyway, all one needs to do to instantly stop tracking on a cell is just pull the battery, whereas it's evidently a bit more complicated than that where the OnStar unit is concerned (per JKD's post).

As I eluded to before, my own view is OnStar (tower cos too, if applicable) ought to be paying me for providing them with the info they are selling to whomever. I'm not paying them to do anything but what I want them to do...and selling my info isn't one of the things I want 'em to do.

I wonder if BMW is doing the same thing as GM.

Apple is tracking you, so maybe BMW as well.

Maybe Sam knows.

OnStar is the one doing the tracking...not the car co.

Apple has a new Suppository Tracking Device for BMW drivers only. No ringer, only vibrate mode.

You mean one of these. The camera lens will get a little dirty though. :lol

OnStar is owned by GM.

btw - heard yesterday that GM is backing away from implementing their revised info policy, due to "public pressure and potentially future Government actions."

I was informed 3 days ago (in response to my emailed nastygram on this subject) that I was going to get a call from OnStar regarding my "concerns".

I'm still waiting...
