A gentleman was reviewing mt photos of the vehicles used in the 4000ft AZ desert track and found something intriguing. The inside tread of the ZL1 seems to be smooth while the outer tread of the rear wheels is still visible. The question is why?
It appears as though the tread of the Goodyear G2's have been shaved down.

Far from full tread Goodyear F1 G2's

Bring up the LS teadwear from the same event and the questions go deeper. Whats interesting is that the treadwear from the LS is 60 while the ZL1 tires are rated 220.

Does the tire tread manipulation enhance the time performance?

Without a doubt. How much depends on a lot factors. Why GM would not run both cars on brand new tires we will never know. Specifically for a supposed independent test!

Didn't the GT-R do something similar when it originally unveiled?

I think the Vette showed up at Car and Driver (or was it Motortrend?) test with questionably shaved tires. It outperformed the 458 on the track but of course the 458 won anyway. Bitch session ensued on the letters to the editor the following month.

The real issue is how could Motor Trend not have noticed or checked for this.

They knew from the get go and said it made for an uneven playing field. The Vette lost to the 458 due to it's.......................seats.

You know, the fit/finish, the "whole experience" of driving the car etc.

It's pretty widely assumed/known/accepted as a "given" that Ferrari 'custom preps' their cars for whatever type of test/track/comparison that's scheduled.

So, M/T probably chalked the 'Vette's tires up to 'CARma' created by the likelyhood of the above and ignored the tires. I would have...

Yea Ferrari likes to know where they are testing 2 weeks in advance so that they can test and tune prior to the mag tests. It still astounds me that GM feels the need to run on unequal grounds even when running their top camaro v the 2nd best mustang. To my knowledge the 11/12 gt500 still laps VIR quicker than the LS.

I did not know that. Does VIR have long straighaways?

DBK has quoted 257 from the Ford GT and 258 from the 11/12 GT500 svt pack at VIR with Gene at the wheel. I have yet to hear of a faster LS time.

Around 2000 Coletti built the SVT Boss mustang. It was a one off to go against a no hooked barred camaro. It had a Boss 429, probably bored and stroked and a huge EFI system. It claims to make 855 hp.

It was built for a race against the camaro for a magazine article. I think I originally read about it in Car and Driver. The race happened and the boss killed the Camaro. After the race hoods were popped and it was revealed that GM was using a Donovan? Racing engine. Cheaters couldn't even come to the fight with a GM motor.
