Someone need to fiqure out how to install one of this blowers into a FGT and then give Ray a run for the money! :lol

You're one warped dude! :lol

Probably have to be careful not to suck spectators into the intake. :lol

P51? or is that one for a radial?

Just think of all the things they were doing 60 years ago with those fighter engines

water and methenol injection
overhead cams
supercharging

more?

the fuel they used must have smelled good. :biggrin Like the old premium of the 60s.

Roush's P51 Merlin

Here's what it goes on. Bill "Tiger" Destefani's highly modified P-51D Reno Air Race plane "Strega". I took these pictures last weekend at the Chino, CA Airshow. 28 of the 55 flyable P-51s that exist were in the air over Chino last weekend. An amazing sight and even better sound.

Last week, I got to tour the Roush Aviation shop in Livonia MI, and see these engines up close and in various states of assembly, and disassembly. Truly amazing technology as these were designed in the 30's. Also interesting to learn of the upgrades over the years in the valve trains, and pistons etc. The current weak link is the connecting rods, which they are "working on". One cool part of the rods, is one rod is a fork (where it mates to the crank) that allows the opposing rod to go "through" the fork of the opposing rod, this allows the cylinders to not be offset, making the engine shorter.

Really an amazing experience.

I'm amazed there are any Rolls/Allison engines around at all today considering how many were 86ed in unlimited hydro racing.

Edit: BTW, what IS the deal with the 'warped' blades on the prop? I'm assuming that's obviously an optical illusion?

Gosh what a beautiful aircraft, thanks for posting the photos Chip

Esp. given that many of these engines found their way into hydroplanes in the 60's-70's.

As Specracer mentioned, when Roush decided to embrace the hobby w/his P51 and couldn't find parts, he simply decided to go into the parts business. He now has an FAA certified facility in Michigan to manufacture many of the critical items.

Lots of the engines used originally in the unlimited class boats were Allisons. Merlins were used later in the mid 70's by Bernie Little's Budweiser and others. Bernie switched to the very rare Rolls Royce Griffon in '79 through '85 ushering in the turbines when rarity and cost made the Griffon unobtainable to other teams. Something like 70,000 Allisons, 160,000 Merlins and 8,000 Griffons were built. Their is a Ford connection as some Merlins were built by Ford in England.

I took these pictures last weekend at the Chino, CA Airshow.

Boy, I wish I knew this was going on last weekend instead of going to the Strawberry Festival in Ventura. :frown

It would have been great to hook up with you Chip.

Seldom will you ever see this many Mustangs in the same place at the same time. Beautiful planes 'eh. Here's a better look at a freshly built Rolls Royce Merlin V-12 in a BRAND NEW P-51D under construction. It can be yours for 2.5 to 3 million dollars. I'll do a whole thread with photos from last weekend when I get a chance.

P-51 My Favorite airplane for sure!

If I was licensed to fly a P51 I would love to do it at least once. Chip have you ever flown one?

Unfortunately....

Ice,

No I haven't. It's on the bucket list though. These are 2+ million dollar aircraft and it's a bi**h to get insurance. They are not dual control so unless you own the plane, the owner would have to let you take it up uninsured and trust you wouldn't stack it up. I have over a thousand tailwheel hours and am confident I could fly a 51 without any difficulty but I can't afford one right now. There is one dual control P-51 I am aware of in Florida (Crazy Horse). Perhaps I'll do that. But that's not the same as taking your own to an event like Chino. Hopefully someday before I'm too old I can pull it off.

Here are photos of some other aircraft that were on display last weekend that I have flown. These are the North American T-6/SN-J, Lear 23, North American T-28 Trojan, Douglas DC-3, and Northrop T-38 Talon. The T-38 is a lot faster than the Mustang, but not nearly as COOL. :cool

P-51s

Jack Roush's personal P-51 is the redone "Old Crow" of Bud Anderson. He had it built at Cal Pacific Airmotive hear me in Salinas, CA. I love the P-51B Razorback model.

Aren't the race Mustangs posted other people's planes that are sponsored by Roush? I don't believe those are owned by Roush. He owns two & they are not raced!

Here is a photo of Roush flying Old Crow in 2008 here in CA. He also owns a P-51D called "Gentleman Jim". Roush is more into the history of the P-51 rather than the performance/speed aspect.

There is another thread with a lot on P-51s with photos too.

Ed

PS I've seen low hour engine P-51s going for less than $2 million. Tom Cruise bought his for $1.5 million.

fly a P-51

Black Ice - you can fly a dual control P-51D next weekend May 28+. It's only a few miles from your house. Look up the Collins Foundation! I've flown with them. They have a cool dual seat Me-262! I'll meet you there if you want to do it. PM me.

Ed
