6% in Florida, plus an additional % on the first $5k in some counties (typically 1%). I bought my GT out of state and didn't pay sales tax at the time of purchase. I paid the sales tax when I registered the GT in Florida. The tax was nearly $10k. The woman at DMV did a double take and asked "what kind of Ford IS THIS?".

6% of "reported" sales price. If a private purchase it is your responsibility to tell the state what you paid for it.

Florida buyers and sellers should be aware that the seller is required to report the sale price and if the reported price is less than 80% of the average loan value, our good friends at the Department of Revenue will require the buyer to submit affidavits verifying the price.

As you can probably imagine, the friendly seller who previously told his buyer to report "whatever he wants" as a sale price is not likely to stick his neck out and commit a crime by signing an affidavit indicating a false price. This puts the buyer in an awkward position with his friends at the Department of Revenue.
