Electric cars really cheaper? Some think not!

That is obvious to anyone with common economic sense. Otherwise why do they need a subsidy?

In CA it is even worst! My marginal rate for electricity is 0.48/kWh. This is the rate I pay for about 75% of my consumption! That would be very poor $/mile number when compared to gas. Now I could apply for a time of use meter to get lower rates when charging at night, but then I would pay more then 0.60 per kWh during the day!

Beside it doesn't scale, if you got enough electric cars on the road to even make a dent in CO2 output (debatable), you would have enough power plants to charge them! Instead of peak loads due to a/c, you would get peak loads when people are charging their cars.

The Volt will be GM's modern version of the Vega!

Electric cars are not particularly 'green' either. The batteries are made in different places to the rest of the vehicle, involve the use of heavy metals and are not recyclable. Also the electricity made to power them has to come from somewhere, and that ain't too green either!

Why are you all killing my buzz...Can't you imagine how happy the unicorns and Gaia will be when everyone has an electric car!:lol

Blackice

What do you pay per kilowatt for you home electricity? Are you saying you pay .60 for each kilowatt?

We pay .10 a kilo in Texas. Is electricity really 6 times more expensive in CA?

YES!

The idiots in CA don't like to build power plants, instead they believe in conservation and tiered pricing. Conservation policy is a euphemism for supply constraints, while the population is still growing. Tiered pricing is just income redistribution of wealth from larger home owners to small home owners and renters. If I was a business my rates would be less, maybe $0.25 kWh.

To me there is no mystery why CA's budget and economy is in the dumps, while TX is one of the fews states doing relatively well during this recession.

Cheap, abundant energy for everyone is a one of the key enablers of economic growth and competitiveness IMO.

Amazing

My home electricity bill if I had my house in CA would have been over $4000 last month. I just don't see any benefits to living in CA.

I have over 11,000 sq. Ft with a little under 3000 sq. Ft. of garage(s). I spent a lot of time calculating the sun travel during the seasons and accommodated up to an R45 insulation accordingly - twice the Title 22 report recommendations. All doors/windows are dual glass with highest Low-E available. Dormers engineered for the multi-faceted roof lines etc... My point, we have had 2 weeks where the temps went over 100 outside and the downstairs peaked at 79 degrees during the hottest part of the day. lower garage is mostly concrete and it stayed at 74 degrees. Strategically placed fans can help with the cooling, after-all our body temperatures are 98 degrees.

All new appliances are low amp. motors and seriously efficient. As for the 2 weeks of temps above 100 degrees, I fired up the natural gas 50KW generator to turn on the 4 ACs....But only long enough to bring the temps down to a comfortable level to go to sleep.

My electric bill, $320...

Only the weather. :(

You prove that CA is ripping us off! You can generate your own electricity cheaper than buying it from the utility company. I did the calcs for my gasoline generator and even at $4/gal, my cost to generate was less than I was paying the utility company! That was not counting wear and tear on the equipment though.

Only 400ish kilowatts for the whole month? Even with almost no AC usage how can you only use that much? I'd think lights and other "stuff" would add up to more than that.

I'm not doubting but rather just trying to make myself understand.

I like it no higher than about 75F, but prefer 72F or lower. Last month I used kWh. Much more than Sam. I have pool pumps that work 6 hr a day cycling water through my "green" solar panels, that plus the a/c uses up a lot of watts. When all of my a/c units and the pumps are running the meter running at 13KW+!

When I was single and working my bill was very low, since no one was never home, now with a family and me being unemployed the kWh use increases. Maybe I should go back to work in a nice a/c office and have my wife do the same.

CFLs, Dimmer Switches, High Efficiency appliances, 4 stage pool/spa pump and plenty of windows/glass for light. The boys are on a reward system, every time I catch their rooms with lights on and no one in, they loose $2/incident off their allowance. At the end of the month if the Bill is below $350, they get an extra $5 per week. They quickly figured they are better off getting the $$$ instead of the utility company.

BTW, the biggest criminal is Flat Screens... We maximize the use of the Theater Room & Projector. Far more cheaper.

I thought the newer LED flat panels used only about 200 of less watts. My projector's bulb alone is 350w. The whole unit must be pushing 450w. Not to speak of the cost per hour on the bulb's life. The only savings on a projector is that if everyone watches the same thing the cost per person declines.

When we moved we brought with us a Plasma, a couple of LCDs and bought 2 new LEDs. You are correct about the LED they do use quite a bit less energy. When the kids watch the LCDs in their rooms they get 2 hrs a day maximum and that is because they are both fantastic kids and A students, so I can not complain much. The Epson projector my wife picked, is very efficient and that it was designed to go in a drak room with no windows - I'll look up the specs later. And yes, we all watch movies together to keep the family cohesive. We take turns picking movies, but dont ask me what I've spent on BluRay movies cause I dont want to know. BTW, we have Verizon FIOS here with a Master DVR that allows you to pull shows from anywhere.

Plasmas! The green police are knocking on your gate!

Sam,
You forgot to mention all the power your iPad burns. From what I hear it is being used non stop!

Oh shut up Jim... I can't stick a memory stick in it to look at pictures, it does not play HD movies and can't stick a CD in it. When I ask my wife how would you classify it if its not a PC or a Phone what is it? She said shut up.. I can download Apps....

But what the hell does this thread have to do with iCrap anyways... Why don't you tell us about your Leaf your getting...
