Dash Cover

On my way back from Troy, Michigan, where I had a "Gurney Bubble" installed, I stopped in the Phoenix area at Dash-Topper who I feel makes one of the finest dash covers. They used my GT to make a new pattern, as they had previously been unable to obtain a car for this purpose. These covers protect the original dash cover from sun (and temperature) damage.

We decided to make mine in black suede in order to reduce the windshield reflection of the GT's leather dash cover. They will make the cover in velour, carpet, suede or Sedona suede (a perforated suede), in a variety of colors. I have purchased the velour for previous vehicles, and I like it very much. However, when we tried it, it also causes a large reflection. The suede cover is virtually undetectable in the windshield;

You can now order these covers from Dash-Topper. You can view their products at www.dashtopper.com, ane they can be reached at (800) 634-5645. The part number for it is F333-05. Look it up on the web site for 2005 vehicles. The cost is about $60.

Whoa, Ralphie, outrageous. Good thing it's not carbon fiber or Bony would steal your first edition. Got any pics? Thanks Frank

any chance for a picture?
please. :)

I don't have any pictures yet, as it's in the car. I'll try to take some there tomorrow.

Here are 3 pictures of the Dash-Topper dash cover - in black suede.

It's certainly an interesting look, I quite like the mousehair finish to the dash on the Ferrari Dino but not sure I'd add carpet to the GT.

How is the dash cover secured in place? It may have more value as a cover during a car show on a hot, summer day.

The cover is secured with small (about 3/8" square) stickyback velcro tabs which can be located whereever you choose. You put the stickyback side on the current dash, and the velcro holds onto the dash cover.

It's really not a mousehair finish - the photo doesn't do it justice. It's suede, like the shoes we used to wear in the '50s. The pad is about 3/16" thick.

And, for the price, you can throw it away if you don't want to use it (compared to most GT options).

Shag?

Since our FGTs are modern retros shouldn't that dash cover be made of shag?

I am interested in info and pics re: the gurney bubble. Who all has one? What does Saleen charge to install one? is it better to buy a new door and keep the original as a spare?

Thanks

Saleen will only sell you a new door with the bubble in it. They remove all your hardware and put it on the new door. Cost was about $9K.

Good idea Ed, you can wear your paisley Neru jacket to really finish off the look! In all seriousness, thanks Ralphie for donating your car's dash dimensions and taking the time to post the info on this product.

Here's a pic of my Gurney Bubble.

The cost to have your own door modified is $5,900 plus tax. I don't have a price for a new modified door, if you wish to keep your own door. And yes, they remove all your door materials, and replace a large number of them, and of course, repaint it. The time required to modify your own door is a week (5 days). My quote is attached.

While there, they will also touch up any paint chips for you, as they originally painted all of the cars.

Ralphie,

Thanks for the info on the bubble. I appreciate it! I'm right at 6'3 and can't fit in the car with a helmet. Both my sons are close to 6'4. this may help.

Nathan -

I had the same problem with the helmet, as I'm 6'2". I took my helmet with me to Saleen, and we adjusted the bubble from the "standard" position to give me the maximum amount of room that they could do without compromising the structural integrity. Talk to them about it when you have it done.

Didn't I see somewhere that the GT Forum members receive a price discount on the dash covers? What is the discount code... I'm ready to order a couple.

I'm not sure - just contact Dash-Topper with any questions. I'm pretty sure there is a senior discount. I only posted the info because I was so happy with the results of the dash cover with respect to limiting the reflection of the original irregular leather cover. They are very easy to deal with and to talk to - my contacts were Jeff and Jim at Dash-Topper.
