Custom shift light

I communicated with the fellow that is fabricating the light and he said he can get it down to any number of lights and colors. He is going to remove the circuit board from the light bar and have it as a stand alone box that can be remote mounted. The electronics that he has built in provides for each light to represent 350 RPMS. So....10 lights would get you to 3500 etc.
I would assume he could change the values so that we could get to a lower number of lights.

I am going to get a prototype made and will get it installed to check it out.
Stay tuned.

Nice idea. Mine has three lights that flash sequentionally and does the job very nicely. The lights can be set at different rpms, so # 1 may be 5900, # 2 6100, # 3 may be 6300 or whatever point one decides for themselves.

Although its mounted at the speedo my eyes pick-up the flashing when the shift point gets close. Too many lights, IMHO, detracts from the purpose. Also having directly in front could be annoying for street driving.

I want to add a shift light to my car. There are a few options discussed in this post. Tungsten, did you install your chase shift lights? Where do you connect the wires?

Thanks

I also like the idea for an array of progressive RPM LEDs similar to what used in the digital dashes on race cars... anybody having luck with this so far?

I found this website while researching sequential shift lights:

Another option (or addition) to a shift light is a shift buzzer. I found that on a hectic autocross course I often overlooked the shift light I had installed in my old 911. I replaced it with a buzzer (Radio Shack) that works great. I have it set for 100 RPM before the MSD system interrupts the ignition, so I know it's coming. The buzzer is hooked into a memory tach so I can set it for a different RPM than the MSD system. Although I'm the only person I know using a buzzer, I found that I can concentrate on the road without sharing the view with a light. Works for me.

Well now that I'm pulleyed up I can say things happen real quick when you hit the upper power band. I purchased a small MSD LED shift light from Jegs. It's nice to bang off the shifts and not worry about hitting the limiter or trying to see the tach at speed. I didn't want to see the shift light hosing so
I took it apart and made the LED into a remote display. I first used the supplied red LED arrangement. I mounted it in a spot that was in my line of sight. I made a real thin alum. plate , wrinkle painted it and just wedged it in the gap under the dash. It worked great !!
Than after a few drives I realized that a only drove the car with the Steering wheel that high so I could see the tach. I've been doing for so long I was use to it. Well now with the shift light and no real reason to see all of the tach I placed the steering wheel in the most comfortable spot for me. Well now the first location wasn't so good

I broke open my stash of ricer LED stuff and a fabricated an even more interesting shift light and I went with Blue LED's to match the rest of my " Blue Light Special " ( If you've seen my car you'll understand ) I must say It came out cool and looks like little aero bullets protruding from the dash. Just a little accent and not to overpowering. The placement is perfect for heads up driving and is very bright for day time viewing !!! I know I've got too much free time on my hands but these Blue lights have a real purpose and look cool as well !! :banana

thats insane, I love it.

Howard,

I really like your SHIFT BUZZER idea.:thumbsup

For those of us that are visually impaired, the BUZZER would allow full concentration on the task at hand without looking away from the road.

Does anyone have a BOM & installation instructions?

I need all the help I can get.:lol

I mounted the buzzer on the lower left corner of my 911's windshield with small suction cups...obviously not an aesthetic option for the GT. But the buzzer is small enough (and the GT quiet enough) to offer other mounting options. I forget which buzzer I chose from the variety that Radio Shack carries, but I looked for the smallest 12V unit with the loudest buzz (they are all rated in db). I used the signal from a programmable VDO Tach that replaced the 5" tach in the 911; again, not an option for the GT. However, there are many programmable RPM readers on the market that are compatible with a shift light or buzzer. Just make sure the output is 12V and can carry the current drawn by the buzzer. An easy winter project.

I found this source of shift lights. Much the same as the MSD that Brian used, but has two advantages. 1st you can tap the primary side of the coil without using a inductive tap that MSD uses. 2nd you can choose to buy the non-integrated solution so you won't have to disassemble the all in one type units.

Disclaimer, I never seen nor used this product so cannot vouch for the accuracy of their claims.

Frank, you still havn't got them??? :frown:lol

Terry, this is a really old post. FastCat put them in the car himself in Vegas.
