I was thinking about messing around with the brains of my old gal a bit (will likely be calling Rich and Denis shortly after for service/repairs :biggrin ). Is the livewire flashing device the best one for monitoring and tweaking? What other options are out there?

Any of the SCT devices will do the trick but from a recalibration perspective they all hold custom tunes created by whoever you purchase the device from. So it truly comes down to the competency of the guy building the files not the device itself. That is a common misconception.

I have heard that the Diablo's require you to disconnect the injection control module whereas SCT doesn't. As Torrie said, the tuning file is what counts. I you want to tweak the tune yourself you can get the RacerPro package from SCT and have at it. But note a bad tune file can shorten your or your engine's life!

On monitoring here... I have the Livewire but couldn't get it to mointor more than 6 (I believe) parameters at a time and I ended up hooking a laptop via USB cable to the Livewire to datalog and that's how I worked with Shadowman over a course of two months with over 10 data files exchanged to trouble-shoot a pinging issue. A pinging issue that a local shop said was exhaust related and wanted me to replace my cats!!! but eventually Bill was able to email me a tune that eliminated the pinging (thanks Bill). But I don't think the Livewire is any better than the XCAL2 which is cheaper. It just loads the tunes a little faster that's all.

Thank you Bruce for the kind words

Now I have watched this thread not sure how to reply; if at all and finally after reflecting back on the many gals I have had the opportunity to massage I would answer the question this way.

The best device tuning device is the individual tuner that is willing to spend the time to make your gal happy; hence the owner happy.

As for whether an SCT or Diablo porting tool is use is IMO interesting and subjective at best because even though they have difference characteristics in the end these are very simply; porting tools; a tool that allows the tuner to migrate the new file into your gal.

Now my personal preference is the SCT porting tool; is it better, on this I can only speculate however it is the product that I am most familiar and comfortable working with.

Knowledge is definitely key to the center of the question as Bill redefines.

XCal 2 / X3 are perfect for those that want to use the device to flash the vehicle only then not use the device again for any other purpose, or as a PSD to datalog across a laptop. The livewire allows you to dash mount it and load and choose whatever PIDs/DMRs you want to log along with 2, 0-5v analog inputs so you could use it view actual boost with a 3 bar map sensor piped into it along with wideband AF. Just depends on what the individual customer wants a the end of the day and that varies widely person to person, application to application.

Note to everyone take your time ask questions and make informed decisions.
