During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions, until I read the last one: "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?"

Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade.

"Absolutely," said the professor. "In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say, "hello."

I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

Amen to that... :thumbsup

But, did you know her dog's name?

I was Toto!

:lol

Great lesson and good reminder.....

Great story, I was thinking about it last night and it's quite touching. It's easy to overlook people on the lower rung of the ladder sometimes... I'm sure I've done it, maybe not intentionally, but a simple Hello or friendly greeting can sometimes make a big difference in someone's day.

As I told my employees at my boat dealership years ago, we must treat everyone who walks through the door as though they could purchase the entire store, from the poor old scrap guy to our best (multi-millionaire) customer... I think we did a good job of it.

( and yea, I occasionally had to throw a few deadbeats out of the store, but it was a rarity)

With your permission, I'd like to forward that story to one of my friends (happens to be college level instructor too) who would also appreciate the lesson.

Shoot, Dave, the story was emailed to me. I have no idea who origionally wrote it...whether its a "true" story or not or whatever. But, in so far as I'm concerned - go for it. :thumbsup :cheers
