Anyone ever stranded in a GT?

Yes axle bolts. Had to have the wife tow me with her Lexus. Sucked.

Early on in the discussion, I skipped changing my axle bolts just to see if they would in fact break. Took about 8k miles I think. Knew it as soon as it happened. Free revs at a busy intersection. Climbed out and shoved it off to the side of the road with the help of a gas station attendant. No cell phone juice. Was lucky and was on my parents side of town. Managed to get ahold of them and find their spare key. Called Rich Brooks and had him come up to get it. In the meantime, rode a bicycle back up to the car. Shoved the shaft back in and made it around the corner. Fell out. Shoved it back in, timed the left turn light, made it through. Fell out. Did it one more time and made it back to their house.

Rich and Denis showed up, loaded the car, and before we headed off to their shop, I got a ride back up to get the bicycle. In the time it took to get the car over there and get it loaded up, some dickhead stole the bike off the side of the road. I called Jamal and told him he owed me a bicycle.

Only problem I've ever had with the GT.

My Z06 stranded me too. It was on the "break whichever stock part is weakest" plan after I started modifying it.

Had the halfshaft bolts preventatively replaced with the Accufab parts. Didn't even know if the prior owner had done them. Apparently he had not and the RH was leaking badly. One catastrophe averted.

Has anyone had serious damage as a result of the axle bolt failure? I can't imagine that under load if it should fall off, that it wouldn't take something else out with it. I saw one being dissected 2 weeks ago - and was surprised to see the two inner bolts that were sheared completely on both axles. The outer bolts were not damaged; just the inner ones.

LOL - I'm in the process of a major build on mine now (doubling up on power)...and went through the exact same thing during the discussions with the shop. We never know where to stop and when...

Just picturing all this was really entertaining.

My escapade posted last Saturday does not count. Went to start the car to finalize prep for the Rally and car would not start! Not stranded, but if I had not found a battery that fit, I believe it would have counted. Sure did not look forward to going to Rally 8 without the car.

I cant imagine working on a car standing on a fire ant mound. Those things are terrible and I react very badly to their bites. Torrie, you have a great disposition if you can look back on it with hilarity.

BTW, this thread is truly a testament to the quality of the car and "Built Ford Tough" and these cars are not "trucks."

MAD fails to recall his flat tires. I think he has had three. Think his wife doesn't like him?

no kidding. I did forget about that. First time I was burned was on literally leaving the driveway going to Rally 1. Heard a click, click, click. Turned out to be a frigging lag bolt. Tire plugged. Next time, one week after return from R1. Turned the corner and again click, click, click. A machine screw. So wtihin 5k mile of owning the car two- three tires wasted. Wish Bridgestones were available back then.

I was at the dyno shop in Brantford Ontario to get the stock car dynoed. On a the third pull nothing was happening. Put it up on the hoist and the whole wheel and axle came right out. half shaft bolts broke. Thank god it was at this shop and not on the road. Called the 1800 ford customer care number. They sent a flat bed to pick it up and bring it all the way to Pollito Ford in Lindsay. Over 150 miles one way.
Never had a problem since. Most reliable car i have ever owned.

Yes, and you can imagine how awesome it was every time I had to get out, lift the clamshell, lay on top of the tire and reach my arm down in the to push the shaft back in (sometimes having to rock the car forward or back to get it to line up). The second time it happened I was trying to loop around a new subdivision entrance just in time to get stuck blocking the road in front of a dump truck full of Mexican landscapers. "What's wrong with the pretty car man?"

I'm still mad about that bike.

+1

"I'm still mad about that bike.":rofl :bang:smash :mad

The lesson is that the best chance of getting a roadside breakdown is the half-shaft bolts. Get them replaced if they haven't been. I checked the OASIS report on my car and found the timing was correct for the updated Ford version so I think I'm safe.

I can't believe someone stole your bike in Detroit.

I do love how Dave is generally pretty nonchalant or even-tempered about some of Detroit's downside.

That's an understatement if I ever heard one.

"Honey, I think someone just got shot in the front yard."

"Yeah, could you please hand me the remote?"
